Containers clanking

I don’t often overnight in service stations but with a 12 hour wait for next job I decided it might be best. Anyway never noticed before but every container trailer that pulled out clanked like it had swiped out the truck next door.
What clunks?

Do you mean the axles cracking when screwed around when heavy or the container bouncing in the twist locks when empty

After a certain amount off use, a sliding skelly gets a little bit off wear/play in the locking pins and bushes/rollers. This causes the 2 halves of the chassis to move against each other independently. And it does sound like the old steel sprung axles clanking, as Chester posted  .

If they get too worn it can actually be quite a jolt as they twist about, then its time to replace the pins

You get the same with trombone flatbeds. Same reason.

I suppose you would

Back when every trailer had steel springs, had was like a one man band going down the road. Percussion from the springs, and a tune full whine from the drive axle, especially Leylands

I worked for a firm years ago that also had a hire fleet with loads of Erfs with the eaton box and the young 21 year old girl in the office who they put thru her class one but had never driven a truck in anger was a dab hand with the box . They often had drivers come back 10 mins after taking the truck away claiming that the box was u/s so she wud get in drive around the block with them and say so it is sir . Many a driver left that yard red faced with us lot laughing our heads off
