I have worked for both Prestons and Containerships so rather than conjecture lets look at real experiencePrestons
I worked for Prestons subsidiary FVS for many years, the money wasn’t market leading, but they ran safe and legal, the kit could be old but the maintainence was top notch, I was NEVER asked to push the legal lines- working for FVS they got me into doing abnormal loads that led to me moving onto Econofreight- the best career move I could have made- when I was there Derek and Martin in the office were top notch, and would back up a driver all the time I have no bad word to say about working there- money was about average for the region,Containerships
They had a deserved reputation on Teesside many years ago for running with little regard for the rules, That all changed by the time I worked there- the pay scheme looks complicated but it does pay (take Home) probably well above the average wage for drivers on Teesside - the kit has improved in the last few years , and shall we say that the HR department has far more say than a shouty person in the traffic office which has reigned in that what was at times a toxic atmosphere , it is easily the fastest growing haulier on Teesside having trebled in size in the last 4 years and its turn over of staff is very small- at one time to earn money at Containerships your face had to fit- now most guys I know that work there are content- not many leave that says it all
Talking to Prestons/FVS drivers on a daily basis and the one thing they all agree on is the wages are now crap for the effort involved, theres a few more leaving this week as well, if any newbies want a job and dont mind getting there hands dirty and driving a pink Scania you know where to go
I went for a job pulling containers about 10 years ago at Sandtoft, there were two R,O,P full pay if you were actually running and Half pay if you were waiting to tip or pick up, I laughed and told him to F/O stupidest thing I have ever heard, there were some strange pay systems around a 10/15 years ago, but they all had one thing in common they shafted the driver, one place run some kind of scheme where you “banked” hours, but if say someone did not turn up on Sunday they would expect to ring and you would come and do it on your day off for no pay because of these “Banked” hours, I could not quite get my head around it and it was years ago ARLA FOODS?, but they paid you for so many hours per week, if you did it in less the hours were “Banked” and you owed them time, or if it took longer they owed you time and took it out of your ■■■■■■ “Bank” what a load of ■■■■■■■■ that was.
A pink scania!?!?!?!?
I wouldn’t be seen dead driving that!
■■■■■■ hate scanias! [emoji23]

It’s not allowed, mate. Neither is the “all drivers must complete a minimum of 6 jobs per day” notice that you see on skip firm weighbridges. It’s illegal. So is shredding rubbish and calling it fluff, but who cares eh?

You can’t pay like that now but could & Containerships managed to keep it
rob22888:
You really need to enquire with existing drivers there. Containerships seem fairly well regarded so the drivers must be able to make good screw out of it. You’ll need to do 1500 miles a week to secure £500 before other add ons, so paramount your consistently planned distance work and don’t spend too long ■■■■■■■ about in container yards.Defiantly wouldn’t entertain it myself.
Well their drivers always in a rush, driving the Terminals like it‘s F1 and a few weeks ago the following happened on a store delivery. They won a new contract recently for that one:
One of their drivers was told he had to wait 1-2 hours with security in the drivers area while they tip him.
He didn’t like it, closed his doors and took the load. The customer didn’t reseal the box and off he went.
Don’t know how they make money if they their drivers take the full container back for no reason.
EDIT:
- The only one earning anything with these rates is Containerships, definitely not the drivers when you consider that there is a lot waiting „time/sleeping on the bunk“ involved working on boxes.

Hi I’ve just been for an interview today and when I asked pay rates I’m told it’s 33 pence per mile, £12.50 for starting before 4am, £10 for opening the back door s, £15 to assist with unloading£50 to start for a Saturday or Sunday and if I pull there tautinliner it’s £10 for every time I have to open the curtains
Absolute brain ■■■■, I’ve no idea if it’s even legal to operate like this?
They told me if I’m waiting at a delivery point obviously I ain’t earning but after 2 hours of waiting I get a £25 quid standing allowence
Anyone on here paid by the mile care to share your experiences?
Walk and tell them to put their rates where the sun doesn’t shine.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
ABSOLUTE COWBOY OUTFIT IMHO.
Don’t know in what area you live in or looking but if this is for their Goole depot, there’s a few better operators in Hull, Immingham, Leeds etc.

Ok if Containerships is such a good employer why do they pay absolute rubbish these days?
That pay deal is not worth the paper is written or printed off on.
Sorry but firms who pay like this don’t get my sympathy for one second.
Thing is it’s ok being able to scratch a living out of it and taking home decent pay or whatever.
But what would you put on a form for a mortgage when it asks your basic salary…

Mileage rate x miles per year based on your PAYE tax records ?.On that note 30p per mile would have put me on £ 600 per week in my last job instead of around £350.The former probably would have covered a mortgage the latter certainly wouldn’t.No surprise that long haul runs don’t generally pay mileage rate. While containers probably would now that rail has taken most of the long haul work leaving just relatively local runs involving loads of waiting/loading/unloading time.
Can work out good if you do a distance run. For example i got £130 for a 10hr shift which included the break

I know it looks crap on paper and it certainly wouldnt be for me but… they dont seem to have a massive turnover of drivers and are only taking on because they are expanding, also there is more jobs than drivers on Teeside at the minute so they arent going to Conships because its all there is, as i say i wouldnt do it but there must be a good reason plenty do

It’s not quite true to say that it isn’t allowed. An employer cannot use a pay scheme which encourages drivers to break the law and yes this could be viewed as doing that. However if an employer puts a clause in the contract of employment and implements it, to the effect that any work carried out illegally is not paid, that should quite neatly keeps them on the clear. So if you ran 10 minutes over and covered 6 miles, then you would not be paid for those 6 miles.
This isn’t me saying it’s a good or bad way of being paid that comes down to the job as a whole.
Broadly speaking…
Payment schemes like this are there to benefit the employer not the employee. On that basis alone I wouldn’t go near it, cushy job or not.
In the days before the outlawing of profit for miles pay structures, it was easy to spot those companies who used it. They’d be the ones passing you at 65+, overtaking at really chancey opportunities and literally running around in the docks looking for their trailer. They seemed no better off for it at the end of the week, we all had the same mortgage deficit and crappy Ford Escorts in the car park.
No one got rich except the gaffers.

We’re back to being resident in the UK and driving a foreign car again. As long as you do a day trip to Calais every six months, blah blah, we’re paying you by the mile but we won’t pay you for illegal mileage blah blah.
You have to ask yourself why a contract needs a clause like that.
I wouldn’t fancy my chances defending that clause in court if something bad happened, would you?
