Indonesia sends back 113 shipping containers with dangerous and sometimes toxic waste from the UK and the Netherlands. The container had been brought illegally into the country. The container contained, among other electronic waste, asphalt, soil and household waste, said a spokesman for the Environment Ministry said today.
The containers were discovered in January at the port of Jakarta. Investigations revealed that the containers had been imported in violation of national environmental laws by private companies. The Ministry of Environment initiated a case against several suspects, but charges were not previously raised.
The documents for returning the container to the UK and the Netherlands had already been signed, added the spokesman. “Our country must not be used to solve the waste problems of other states.”
