I’ve been thinking about becoming an od; Any advice appreciated, particularly getting cpc, approaching bank etc. Workwise I’d stick to what I know (tippers) and I’d know who around here to approach for work etc.

Good luck
good luck.
braver man than me, thought about it a few times, but, well always decided against it.
hope it works out if you take the plunge.
go for it i say .
i took my C.P.C in 1994 with the intention of doing just that , never had the bottle though because ive seen plenty of grown men cry wondering where the next tank of fuel is coming from … wish i’d done it though .
good luck …
Good Luck
Approaching the bank requires a sound business plan, and having a sound knowledge of the industry, so that when the manager grills you, you won’t tie yourself in knots.
I’m sure there will be some that will push you away from the idea, but I wish you best of luck
Only 7 years into a mortgage, would that cause a problem re loans?

Don’t do it
I know lots of O/O’s who are now almost broke, I also know a few who are making a good go of it. You need to have quite a few grand put by for breakdowns etc. I see some who just manage to get by until something goes wrong then they end up having repairs paid for by whoever they are contracted to untill they are so far in debt to them they have no way out.
I worked self employed for a short while and lost lots of money, I wasn’t even paid for my final run which took over a week.
not mortgage time that will stop you, like everything else nowadays it will be past credit history and if the bank thinks your business plan is a goer, so do your homework first, good luck GO FOR IT

Mortgage plus finance needed to buy a wagon no chance. No mortgage and a cheap wagon bought outright and enough in the bank not to need any finance whatsoever maybe.
Good points, Pat. There are several small hauliers around here who undercut rates abd then moan there’s no money in the job. They’ll complain about fuel cost yet charge about cutting up the jobs, one even being caught fiddling tickets and selling loads on etc.

On the plus side it does mean you won’t lose so much if it all goes wrong. You’ll only lose the house you have been making payments on for a mere 7 years instead of say 15 or 20.
Seriously though, good luck.
I wouldn’t do it.
This country’s ■■■■ ed now! In nearly all industries.
Unless you want to be a robot in a call centre…
The fuel side of it must be the main crippler now, at least when it was cheaper (many years ago now), you could stomach the ‘wait’ for the bill, but not now. The hauliers must be cacking themselves now until they get paid to then pay their bills.
It was becoming difficult for me years ago, and I was just a taxi driver… being undercut and increasing fuel costs back then taught me a lesson!
Like I said Good luck
I have see figures here for around £1:50 per mile
My figures maybe out a little, but not far out
Now looking at Derv costs say £1:40, that makes a profit of £0:90 per mile if youre doing 10 MPG, £0:90 PM to cover everything else, Insurance, Loans, Truck servicing the list goes on and on
The only way I see that it could work is on long runs, non of these poxy local deliveries, Also you need to think about that you may not get paid for a month or two
Think seriously, before jumping, But again, Good luck I wish you luck either way
I’m not sure it’s a good idea for the worlds slowest tipper driver to become an OD. You’ll be lucky to cover the road tax unless you drastically change your ways.

I still do the same as everyone else…It’s just I don’t need to get back early to find out what everybody else has done

I wouldnt be so harsh, but from the posts on here about the job, it wont improve your lot, it just means you have all the worries of a driver plus all the problems you give your boss on one set of shoulders.
Nothing wrong with the idea, you know your customers, they know you, you know the job you want to do.
You are actually in a better position than many, will your boss sell you your lorry? with a few perks up front, like fuel, parking and some work
If you’re serious about it then why not? Good Luck.
I know a guy and he told me the other day that ten years ago it cost him £300 odd to fill his tank, now it costs about £700 odd he said.
I had a Boss who started with 2 Lorries
Himself on one and a newby on the Second.
After a Year he bough a Unit and 2 trailers. The Unit brought trailers from Italy and a German Sup-Contractor swapped and did the German Part.
He then bought twice a Year a Unit and 2 Trailers. The Sup Contractor gave him 30 Day till he had to pay him,and was wisely thinking from North germany. So not every time the Money didnt come visiting him.
After 10 Year was his House build and paid, and he had a big nice Fleet with lots of Work.He sold everything to a Neighbor Trucking Company and retired.
Will say:“You can do it”
But now we have Recession, and you the one which has to wait to get paid.
Good Luck anywhy. You may have here a few who help out if necessary. You know
