Confused about cpc.... help!

Hi, i passed my car test in 1991 and also have 7.5tonne entitlement as you didnt need to do a test for it back then. I will be taking my lgv2 test within the next month or so, do i then need to do the cpc straight away before i can drive for a living or do i get 5 years to do it ? I have read something which seems to suggest that if i pass before sept 2014 i will get 5 years to do it as i already have 7.5 tonne entitlement. Any help would be great, its all very confusing for a newbie !!!

The September 2014 is the deadline that any “acquired rights” holders MUST have completed the 35hrs CPC.

Not quite right, as you have grandfather rights to the C1 category you can drive any category LGV vehicle that you have or get a license for until 9th September 2014, you will need to do the 35 hours of periodic training by then.

If you don’t do the 35 hours of CPC training by September 2014 you will lose the entitlement to drive any LGV category vehicle commercially after that date.

So for example, if I pass test next month I can drive for a living straight away bust must complete the CPC within the next 2 years ?

Exactly so - because you already have a ‘vocational’ licence (your existing C1+E)

Excellent, thanks for the help fellas, cant wait to get on the road ! One last thing, does the cpc training consist of tests which you must pass or is it just “training” ?

Yes and when you put it like that you would wonder why everyone is panicking so much about it.

2014 is more than two years away :unamused:

The thing is everybody says it’s 2 years away so there not having to fork out the money now, but just you wait until the year comes when you have got thousands of drivers wanting to do the training, Prices will rocket to meet demand.

Like lorries and drivers, there are far too many trainers for that to happen, many have jumped on a bandwagon hoping to retire, at the moment many are struggling to pay the first instalment on the villa

Your Grandfather rights started on 9th September 2009 so by 2014 you must have completed 35 hours in a classroom if you wish to drive professionally on or after the 10th September 2014.

There are no exams to pass, you just have to turn up with some valid ID

And it can be completed in blocks of 7 hours.
