link to the gov e petision is on the first post

I would never drive a car that sounds like it has a misfire.

Sorry I won’t sign your petition you are obviously not aware that an MP of ours while on holiday actually killed while driving on the wrong side of the road, the good bit …he was later made a
Minister of Transport.

I didn’t sign it, I feel sorry for her loss but it’s just not been thought out. If I take a load from London to Hamburg, should I have to sit an HGV/LGV driving certificate of competence in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany on the way?

Only I’m thinking it would take me months to get there.

just opinions harry thats all

I’m interested in road safety, as well as the interests of the British haulage industry, I think I might start an e-petition to have the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain rebuilt.

Nick,

You just can’t escape Harry’s logic, he’s spot-on IMHO.

My reason for not voting is along very similar lines…

If the UK were to adopt this idea, it might leave foreign countries with the option to retaliate, then Harry’s scenario might become a reality.

I also think that the idea is poorly thought out and rather unworkable.
Who would pay for these tests and where would they be conducted?
What would happen to the customer’s freight whilst the ‘new to the UK driver’ was being trained/tested?

I have driven a foreign registered LHD artic on UK roads, and TBF, it does require extra observation, especially on roundabouts and when overtaking.
My mantra was: If I wasn’t sure, then I WAITED until I was sure. It’s not rocket science, but people of all nationalities seem to be impatient these days.

I’m extremely sorry that any family suffers a loss due to poor driving, but I don’t think that this idea is the way forward.

i agree dave i havnt signed it and i have driven over europe and ive driven left hand units like you

I agree with most of the above, which is why i did not sign, BUT, with so many accidents in the uk, with a lot of them caused by foreigners, who lack the knowledge, and the experience ( remember the poles who can get a class 1 licence, just for taking a test in a farm tractor, towing a trailer )
I think its up to Brussels, to implement an all round test, for the different categories, as in the uk, and this should be standard for any new member joining the euro club, and for those already in it.
Also, maybe its time the UK started talks on us changing over to driving on the opposite side of the road, and eventually all having left hookers. That would change things for the better…especially if the south did it on friday…and the north did it the following friday.

I think It would be a more sensible idea for all LHD trucks to have a second man by law.
1 It would remove massive blind spots
2 It would increase the operating costs of foreign hauliers

Edit; I didn’t sign by the way some European countries have a higher standard of driving than us.

Where do I sign for that?!?!

The Oirish are switching cars to drive on the right on 1/4/13, if it works then the trucks and buses will do the same the next day.
(It’s ok, I’m Irish so can say things like that without being racist  )

When i’m abroad, The foreign cars usually pass a lorry in the correct way, They don’t sit next to them, They either go past or stay behind.
It isn’t the foreign lorry drivers that are always at fault.

Do you need some help with the definition of “sensible”?
