So I passed my class 1 in April and was working at a food service company doing class 2 work. The money was great but everything else was absolutely [zb]!! Hours, vehicles, conditions etc.
Anyway I went in one day at 3am and was supposed to be doing a run to Stranraer from Edinburgh which had 14 drops. Truck was loaded for me but I had a note among my paperwork which said I was too call on way home in case I needed rescued due to driving hours or wtd… This was the final straw for me so I walked out.
Anyway started with an agency doing odd shifts and 1 successful assessment but the job wasn’t for me… Didn’t feel too easy about jumping straight into depot transfers and trunks.
I applied to a company just outside glasgow who do fridge work and a lot of RDC work, got an interview and was honest about my lack of experience and couldn’t believe my luck when they offered me a start.
2 weeks in and been double manned the whole time with guys who are there to keep me right with the job and help with reversing etc. Turns out I was brutal at it. They had me do a long shift Monday so gave me Tuesday as a kind of rest day and spare man but allowed me to practice my reverses in the yard putting trailers on bays etc and already a lot more confident on customers premises.
The point of the post is this.
I was offered a job tramping, making okay money but no training hitting the ground running which I knew I wasn’t ready for, I’ve took another job which tbh is not as well paid but conditions are fantastic compared to what I’m used to and the experience and training I am getting is second to none.
If only every company offered new drivers the same chances there maybe wouldn’t be so many bridge strikes, crashes or even damaged goods etc?
