But my main beef with handheld phones are those texting and looking at social media, as that does seem to take their eyes and concentration off the road for long periods of time.
That was one of my points mate, what you have just described applies to somebody like me, and maybe you, who hate all this fiddling about scrolling through crap on the dash to …for instance see how many more minutes you have before your next break , or as I said the rigmroal of switching on your night drive lights (all which have been designed to use whilst driving, if they were not you would not be able to do it)
As you said yourself, there have always been distractions, since the old days… cassettes etc., (or for older drivers among us, trying to adjust your air wipers .)
■■■■ happens when driving a truck, always has, always will.
As per the JV show on R2 today. Some council (missed which one) and local police force wants volunteers to spy on and report phone offenders to them so they can follow up and deal with them. One caller said they had phoned a company after seeing one of their drivers leaving the depot (a quarry) whilst on the phone. The company thanked the caller but the caller said he wasn’t happy that the offending individual was only suspended for three days for his actions and should have been dismissed immediately!

What a sad society we have become [emoji20]

I remember how appalled people were, (probably the very same people who want to snoop on you and me ), when we found out that East Germans were encouraged to report their neighbors and work colleagues to the Stasi.

As do I, the younger people have no idea just how damaging to society this is.
One of the many reasons for me planning my escape, I no longer want to live in this country because of the way it is operating, it will end badly.
Many of these arse wipe type snoopers that are getting guys suspended from their jobs will be ironically the type who are too ■■■■ lazy to get off their arses to work themselves.
Others will be the professional complainer middle class fanny types who see themselves as ‘righter of wrongs’
Others, the types who hate everything about trucks and drivers.
I personally hate all of the above.
I aint arguing that these drivers are doing wrong using phones while driving, but it aint the job of these snooping tossers to sort it out …or even get involved.

Whilst I totally agree that there needs to be a crackdown on mobile phone use behind the wheel, I do believe it’s time to remove motoring offences from national crime statistics. Maybe then the ob will put the same effort into crime detection and prevention as they do into motoring offences.
How can they be removed? There are hardly any motoring offences in the crime statistics anyway - essentially only Dangerous Driving and Causing Death by Dangerous/Careless etc driving.
Speeding, no insurance, seatbelt offences, drink/driving, mobile phone usage, Construction & Use offences etc do not form part of the national crime statistics.

Speeding etc used to be counted in statistics in Herts where my stepdad was serving, although he retired 3 years ago so it may have changed

I know someone who should . Silly tart in a mini yakking away drove onto a queue of static traffic and blocked a roundabout oblivious to officer dibble in the car behind her . Very satisfying watching the blue lights go on .
Had one tonight on the M42 - I was gradually catching a car which was gently weaving like a Lancaster looking for night-fighters on the way to Germany. Identified it as an Audi so the driver was either talented at driving whilst asleep or on the phone - I had to stay behind the ■■■■ as I was approaching my exit and as I came off he dived off too at the last second. I pulled level at the lights and his missus was on hers too.
Maybe they were texting each other.
