I was with Comart from 1975 to 1978. I was one of the bad guys though. The only trip I ever did was frozen peas to Paris then empty to Cesena for peaches back to London. And Petal did all the driving.
I’ll add what information I can, but the only photos I have are in the brochure, most of which you have posted.
Keep them coming!

No probs,
I’ll do what I can, you’ll remember this then !!
Yes I am pretty sure that it was Brindisi to Tripoli, and the lambs came from Scotland. I had forgotten all about Barry Tomlinson until you posted his picture here. But 33 years is along time…
Part 2 of the Libiya photos, tried three times in the week on mobile but kept freezing, so hopefully there post now
Wheeler, Pete McCutcheon and Shirley Temple
Wheeler in the cabin - Dont think thats a photo of my mum on the wall !!
Wheeler and Pete enjoying the wares on the ferry
Now apparently it was slightly rough on the crossing
The truck carrying steel fabrications lost its load and there were several vehicles tipped over
On dry land again in Tripoli - not sure they’d want to be there at the moment
Graham Sinnott and Bill Baggeley (updated)
Don’t know who this is ■■
Unloading in the street by hand - No health and safety I see
Time for a game of cards and some sun
Pete - Unsure - Bill Baggeley - Graham Sinnott (Updated)
Tom Askey and Bill Baggeley (updated)
Hope you enjoy these, many thanks to Andy once again, more to come
Regards
Ant
I reckon the guy with the afro and moustache (lying down) is Graham Sinnott. He had TVT 997L for a while. I don’t think the other guy is actually George Thorley (George is pictured elsewhere in your post) but…
P.S. The other guy is definitivly Tom Askey. He drove for one of the UK subbies, Frank Lakin from Rugeley, before he was taken on as a full time driver at Comart. The pride of Frank’s fleet was a Scania Vabis, JUX 43E…

Thats all for know folks, thanks again to Andy for sharing these with us.
I am putting some old cine films of comarts on the road and views of the roads and tunnel through the alps, when I work out how to use you tube
The following is a short film put together from cine film clips from nearly 40 years ago so the quality is not brilliant , but I have done my best, the clips of driving up the infamous mountain side road above the steel works heading up to the blanc tunnel were filmed by my Dad while driving !!!
The girl in the pub is Linda (Stone?) who worked in the office and organised the backloads. The guy next to her is Clive Cardy who was the boss when I was there.
Alf Jung is in the left of the picture with Petal, Steve and John McCann.
You are quite right about Jeff from the wash. He worked with Barry Dimmock the yardman. I think the 2 guys pictured with him are mechanics from the workshop, names long forgotten.
The guy to the left of the picture with the guys working on the fridge, with the big beard and the pipe, is Dave Arrowsmith.
You are quite right; it is Graham Sinnott from Penkridge (with the strong brummy accent) pictured in Venice in St. Mark’s Square, along with the others.

PTT - I thought it was Clive but was not sure, also I had forgotten Linda’s name, thanks for bringing it back, she used to give me sweets when I was up at the yard with my Dad. I’ll update names.
Great thread lads,I’ve posted on here before re,John McCann,I tramped europe in the 90’s for his son Simon & had some good evenings swapping yarns with John,he spoke of his time working with you lads very fondly & it was good to see his pic’ poste
It is with much sadness therefore, that I felt I should post this here to inform you of John’s sad passing away last saturday.I received a call from one of my old workmates from the days with Simon on wednesday. A great loss of a true gent’ who will surely be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Hi ant and all gents posting and hope dads (peter McCutcheon ) photos bring back some good memories —firstly can i say how sorry I am to here of the passing of John Mccann – and regards to simon and the rest of the family–Im sure all the lads up there will be burning some diesel and covering some miles with all there trips all over europe and beyond --heaven will be filled with diesel fumes – and now to put some names to faces for you – 2 gents sitting with jeff the wash man --middle man being Roger warrilow and far right Ziggy ( had a false eye and loved putting it in his pint to stop people pinching it used to say it was keeping a eye on it for him lol) – man with tash with girlfriend he was nicknamed scouser for obvious reasons and his girlfriend was from new zealand-- photo of eddie walker and people ollie at cardys house the other two were Stan king and his wife ---- single man was bill baggualey as was the far left man in the five in venice-- hope this helps and look forward to any more pics that come available -----cheers for now
Sorry to hear about John. I worked with him at Comart in the seventies and with Simon for a few months in 2000. Gentlemen both.
Was Scouser’s real name Brian Hanley? If so he worked at Unispeed (Bird’s Eye) then went to New Zealand for a year and came back with a New Zealand girfriend. Linda?
