Cockpit Shine.

What is the solvent for Cockpit Shine-type dashboard sprays? My new (to me) truck has evidently had gallons of the stuff sprayed on, straight over the dirt, and it has gone all scabby and started peeling off.

Any other advice for removing it appreciated.

harry babywipes and plenty of elbow grease mate if its really bad mr muscle multi surface cleaner will do the trick mate

Cheers Carl.

WD40 might do the trick.

Nah cheers BM, I actually tried that and it didn’t work.

EDIT Here’s a pic

I’ve got a fh and previous driver had a smelly on passengers side air vent and the cab was tilted now it looks iike your picture now got a table on with a beer [washed] towel under neath can’t see it now

Harry, 3 in 1 oil rubbed in works better than cockspit shine, also swarfega rubbed in removes most things

everytime i used to get a new ( to me ) truck i always used to a big bucket of warm water a big sponge and mr muscle cleaner oh and some big towels to dry it after. i used to do all the plastic in the cab footwells everything. then i used add some new polish.

Baby wipes feature heavily in my life!

Great for cleaning too

I presume you’ve tried meths Harry?

Well, I have, but never as a cleaning material- thanks for the tip!

It seems baby wipes feature heavily in a lot of drivers lives including mine. Brilliant for cleaning mirrors then polished off with a piece of kitchen roll. Good for cleaning the steeering wheel first thing in the morning and a myriad of other uses.

Yes, I took Little Harry to the farm today to meet the new truck and we gave it a good clean.

I have found out that the solvent for Cockpit Shine is Isopropyl Alcohol, and when I checked the ingredients on the back of my pack of babywipes, alcohol (not Isopropyl, whatever that is- and I’m quite an expert on alcohol!) was the main constituent. Elbow grease, scouring pads and warm soapy water did the rest.

I am going to go to Boots next weekend to see if the chemist will sell me neat Isopropyl Alcohol for the fiddly bits, or where the chemist thinks I would be able to buy some. It’s probably available in Hardware Stores but sold for a different use.

Then I’m going to write to the Home Secretary suggesting that we bring back hanging for Cockpit Shine dealers.

Thanks for all of the advice, I really appreciate it.

Most chemists will sell you a litre of alcohol, I used to buy ti all the time, for cleaning laser printer toner drums as it leaves no residue/smearing.

We did all of that- the usual stuff- cleaned the headlining too (but need to do it again). Brought the curtains home for a spin in the washing machine and I’ll bring the bed cover home next weekend for the same.

Also scrubbed the truck bodywork with Cif and a scouring pad, it’s like high-speed T-Cut.

I don’t mind living in filth and squalor, so long as it’s my filth and squalor!

i go with baby wipes lol …they will even remove tomatoe sauce, chipfat etc from yr jeans etc and leave no stains what so ever …exellent investment imo :slight_smile:P

Absolutely- they even get the cack off of my arse.

Cack and Smeg!!! IMHO!!!

when i was in the army we used to rub engine oil into the plastic before any inspections etc. worked a treat!

  1. spray it on jus b4 am goin home at nite and in the mornin wipe it off or

  2. spray it on at the start of a long tip and wipe it off wen tipped

the longer it stays on the dashboard without bein disturbed the better, my dash looks like it has a wet film over it its tha shiny ! use a soft dust free cloth to buff off aswell an remember were u have sprayed it to make it shiny
