After 37 years on fuel tankers i started a new job as a collection and delivery driver for mercedes benz. Recently we have been getting a lot of coaches in for repair, my question is am i allowed to drive these vehicles on my class one licence. my understanding is , if a coach breaks down at the customers yard we are allowed to pick it up and drive it back to workshop for repair. once the repair has been rectified we are allowed to road test it with the mechanic that repaired it once we get back to yard and mechanic gives it the all clear we are finished with vehicle. we cannot take it back to customer. anyone help please.
You need a PCV. The law doesn’t differentiate whether it has something wrong or not.
thanks stagedriver. the reason i was asking we were asked to take a coach from broxburn to dingwall. this was one of these coaches ,we will call it a six wheeler, top of the range, i refused and said i am not insured nor do i have the correct licence. This is all new to me as all i have been on is fuel tankers but thought i was right to question this.
The DVLA leaflet INF52 says:
Buses that can be driven with
a full lorry (category C) licenceIf you hold a full lorry (category C) driving licence you
can also drive large buses as long as you have held
the licence for at least two years and the vehicle is:
- damaged or faulty and being driven to a place to be repaired, or is being road-tested after repair, and
- is not used for carrying any person who is not connected with repairing or road-testing it.
Whether this would include collecting and delivering it is not clear.

thanks santa.
I used to have my PCV Licence and as far as I am aware, unless you are driving with fare paying passengers or for hire and reward, you can drive a bus with your LGV Licence, no problem.

Sorry sapper there is a problem. It is not legal as that law changed years ago.
Not entirely sure about the rules regarding broken down coaches Matt but seem to remember something along the lines of what Santa quoted and could well be correct.
Ah well, not the first time I have been wrong, someone will be along shortly to give us the correct interpretation, afer all, it is Trucknet.

I believe that the regulations go by the number of passengers you could potentially have on your vehicle.

Are you taking the mick? Nothing to do with the number of passengers either.

No

Yes it does.
A D1 licence is required for up to 16 seats.
A D licence for over 16 seats.
Both are Passenger Vehicle Categories.
A C licence is a Goods Vehicle Category.

What was quoted was a legal answer from an official source so I would presume it to be correct
Yes Dar I know all about the different licenses. The guy was asking if he could drive a coach on an LGV license which is nothing to do with mini buses and passengers.
Well if your a fitter for stagecoach or any other bus company you can drive on a HGV but that’s just from personal exsperance
