Hi nearly there,

It sounds like it’s a dangerous goods restriction sign.

Does the sign look something like this?

The idea behind this is that all tunnels of more than 500m in length on major routes have a safety classification A - E.
A category “A” tunnel is the safest and needs no sign because there are no restrictions.
A category “E” tunnel is the least safe, so most dangerous goods are not allowed to be carried through that type of tunnel.

As you can see, both of the Mersey Tunnels are category “D” as is the Clyde Tunnel.

All dangerous goods are allocated a tunnel restriction code in ADR so we know which tunnels a load can or cannot go through.

Yeah thats the one thanks.so it only affects adr loads, thats why i didnt have a clue what it ment lol

Hi nearly there,

Yes mate, it only affects in-scope ADR loads that are subject to the full weight of the ADR Regs.

The transport of packaged dangerous goods of less than the relevant ADR Transport Category ‘freebie’ limits is unaffected by this, but due to some local bye-laws, some of the tunnel authorities require that a load is inspected before being allowed through.

Those dangerous goods restriction signs don’t affect anybody else.
