Clubs and Dances, Pubs, were truckers delight

Harry, it was about 1972 un- load in Burton, and I parked in midland road, and found a cafe to have a meal, and I saw this secoundhand shop, and a white plastic telly was in the window, I went in and asked how much, £35, has it got a battery lead, no he replied, then it is no good to me, in the end, I got it for either £25/20, then I found out a CB lead fitted it, and wired it to a single battery, even put it to a socket on the dash, and it was easy to plug in. One time when Leeds was playing in Europe, I watched them, when I was parked up in Hull, with the wife and three children, with a pantechnicon, I had a fold up bed, cooking equipment, for I was working on Camping Gaz, we were self efficent, and the kids loved it, when I had it in my cab, and would park up, I would shift my vehicle a few times to get the best picture, and when I wet for a meal, a couple of drivers used to ask me why, I told them the reason, and they would say " Television" we have a bloody job to have a radio, I never knew of another driver having one then, they may have, but I did not meet one until years later, then lots of them got one. Had the tv till about 5 years ago, and it was in my garage, and a old Irishman about 80 who was the husband of a friend of the wife, called around with some veg he had grown, and was telling me the Irish was playing Holland, but he would have to go to the club to watch it, for his wife had soaps on. So I gave him the telly, and told him to set it up in the kitchen, and tell his wife he had got it, so she could do her ironing, and watch coronation street, she would not bother it was black & white, and he could watch his sport on the coloured one, he had two happy years of no quarreling!, what a good set that was. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

hiya,
Never been one for the tele Norm, i suppose i watch more now than i ever did, when i had the dogs used to to spend all my time out with them, but when i had to part company with them because of my inability to exersize them, when i was’nt very well, i suppose i began to develope square vision, and no rabbit pie when my little jack russells were re-homed, that was the hardest thing i’ve ever had to do. And all the pubs, clubs etc have the damned things in, the art of having a bit of craik is gone with them things stuck on the wall, i think i was really earmarked for the steam age.
thanks harry long retired.

One time I was watching pot black, and said a player always had to watch where the green was, because he could not tell the difference from the red ones, he should have tried watching from a black & white telly, they all looked the bloody same.

hiya,
Can remember one of my Grandads ordering a tele from Reddifusion when the installer brought it they found he only had gas in the house seemingly he thought the thing was like his radio and would work off a rechargeable battery, i don’t take after him honest.
thanks harrylong retired.

Harry, I would have thought you would have shown him he could have got electric fron the lamp post. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

hiya,
Norman, i’m not a bleedin ■■■■■.

Ha ha ha, but you knew what I was talking about :exclamation: , well another thing you could have done, is jacked up your rearr axle and run your back wheels with a belt and a generator, and let your poor old grandfather have his telly on.

I used to jack my Albion Reiver back end up and leave her ticking over for the old Servis time Recorder then get a bolloc**** for excessive hours

Sorry duplicate post

How refreshing to find a thread written by real men who knew how to have real fun. try this on the forum and watch all the complaints about driving the morning after!

I came out of the army in the early 80’s and fell straight into a job driving for F&F Robinsons as Brian Rosier was taking over. We had predominantly a young driver base with some great old timers mixed in (just to show us young pups the best nights out). We used to park at Grantham a lot behind the leisure centre (now an Asda site) and ended up on more than one lock in! Newark also was a favourite, the old lorry park beside the river saw many a drunken Friday night.
I remember one Friday night a load of us loaded timber out of Tilbury and ended parking up in Romford, got absolutely wasted and woke up the next day with the market set up around us! A swift “well Boss” phone call from the union rep to the TO had it sorted

Pontefract as has been said before was a fantastic night especially for the single ones amongst us. One pub in particular that was frequented by truck drivers was the aptly named Fraggle Rock! Mainly 'cos the chicks looked like Fraggles! mind you, come ten to eleven they’d turned into absolute stunners.

Maoster glad you like our thread, there is five on the go at the moment, one is Brs, for a few of us used to work for the red & rust, few of them with my name on, some go back 25 pages, the ones who are regulars use their first names, there is Harry, Chris, Dave Keith and myself, Steve in Queenslands has been a very helpful source on names of places, we do like to enjoy ourselves, we did when we were on the road. We are old retired truckers and very proud of it, a couple who are semi, and one who we are giving a good education       , sorry Keith :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Hi maoster, join the club  You didn’t drive one of Robinson’s Foden half cabs did you?

hiya,
Chris mention of Robbo’s half shed Fodens when still on for BRS Blackburn i used to do perspex to Cricklewood it was always early in the morning and always in there was one of Robbo’s delivering dry ice which had been trunked down overnight got to know the shunter very well sort of first name terms, got talking and mentioned that Robinson had made a statement in one of the trade mags that his drivers liked the half cab things, the shunter contradicted that a bit stating the trunkers and all involved with them hated the things, I pulled his outfit out of the bay one day for him and he was correct what a horrible thing and no wonder the lads did’nt like them, and i only moved it 50 yards.
