Clubs and Dances, Pubs, were truckers delight

Those motors look a couple of beauties, I bet they got through a load of work in their time.

Hiya Dave! think nothing of it mate!!If one of those 1962 Brady Octopus’s turned up it could be likened to the “second coming”.Is this the Octopus that is in the Mag? This shot is about 8/9 years old and is at Levens Bridge on the old A6,Eric the driver of JEO 192 is explaining to Ray Stevens who built the “Facsimile” of the Brady 8 wheeler a few of the “finer” points of driving a classic British motor!!! Ray was on his way down to Brady’s in Barrow so I suggested he could meet the actual driver and mate that worked the wagon and trailer,so he jumped at the chance! This particular Octopus had in fact been an old Shell tanker but had the de-rated 600 engine, and the trailer was 2 or 3 foot shorter than the Crane drawbar at Brady’s.Cheers Dennis.

That’s the one Dennis,it’s in the march edition of Heritage Cmmercials magazine. It tells the story of Ray Stevens restoring it in T Brady colours, then he sold it to Tony Knowles. The magazine will still be on sale if you want to get one, there is a five page write up.
Cheers Dave.

Hiya Norm, this shot is the left hand side of a “line up” but I don’t where the full shot has gone!! The motor next to the Octopus is a Super Comet tractor of which Brady’s ran a large number, mainly pulling 4-in-line trailers, but sometimes you’d come across one struggling with a “fully freighted” tandem. On a number of Sunday mornings I’d have to go into the Steel Works with an old Comet to pick up a 4-in-line loaded with 22ton of Signode strapping for transhipping in the yard onto the wagon and trailer for The Abbey at Margam. The load had been put on the 4-in-line by the night shunter on Friday night and “booked out” to our Octopus!!! Such was the Brady conection with Barrow Steel!!!As a by the by I would have to have a “run” at the loaded 4-in-line,and if you didn’t couple up first time it fired you out like a cork out of a bottle!! Happy days! Dennis.

Yes Dennis that is one thing about getting old you can bring back memories of happy times. When I use to go to the fairs & circuses I had the strange feeling a lot of the big vehicle were ex-army, would I be correct, this is years gone bye, say when harry came out of the forces! :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Would that be the Boer War Norm or WW1 ? Dennis.PS I doubt it would have been the Boer War Norm as they used OX teams!! but then the places “H” used to frequent when he was “down the smoke” he would have been fairly skilled at handling old cow’s!!! Dennis.

hiya,
Thanks for that Dennis, you’ve been talking to some of my “running mates” of old ,call them mates, not if they can’t keep a secret, oh’ and not so much about the Boer war just a bit too young but if you ever take a look at the war memorial in Lancaster (where i was born in the crooked house on St Georges Quay) you’ll see the name of a 19 year old WW1 soldier killed in action, my dads brother who i was named after, we was both christened Harold Gill but both used Harry throughout our lives and sadly he did’nt get to use his name for many years, luckily for me i’ve managed to last a bit longer.
thanks harry long retired.

Hey Dennis, you are being a little hard on poor old Harry, I was thinking after the Korean war, even the Suez escapade, About Harry and London and loose women, he told me many times he never went out when in digs, maybe a few times to get a drink? No way would he lie. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

I’d torture the (zb) first then hang the (zb)—it makes my blood boil,it really does! sorry about the rant but thats what I feel.Regards Dennis.

hiya,
When looking at the memorial Dennis glance over to your left and one of the premises you’ll see was the home of the infamous Dr Buck Ruxston he was the guy who murdered his missus and wrapped her dimembered bits in newspaper and threw her all over Scotland and according to my old fellah he announced to my mother that i was en-route and i arrived on time as usual that bit is maybe a fable but he was the family doctor, and if your good lady is still shopping have a stroll along St Georges Quay walk along until you arrive at the Waggon and Horses look at the pub with your back to the river and “our house” is to your left next door i think it is student accommodation now and seemingly it was built like that i think the guy spent a bit too much time next door even the floor in the days of my grandparents was uneven in every room i’m just able to remember living there, so thats my unguided tour of Lancaster, don’t get there very often nowadays but always use the pub car park and walk into town used to have a nice pub lunch there a little while back.

Yes “H” it’s Dalton Square where the memorial is.As for St. Georges Quay,my pal Malcolm Woodhouse Snr,had is depot there for many years, just under the main line bridge on the right,Pine Garage.Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
My character is more private Frazer, a miserable old git “we’re doomed” but i do like a wee dram of the highland dew and i would never have gotten promotion if i’d stayed in the forces for 22 years and i hasten to add would’nt have wanted it so i think l/cpl Jones is a non starter for me always happy as a “buckshee” no ambition that’s me now could you really see me telling people what to do, Dennis I suppose that’s my name off the list for prospective yard foreman and my name put on the list for brushing the yard bit more my style.
thanks harry long retired.
