Clubs and Dances, Pubs, were truckers delight

hiya,
Norm i’m feeling more like the “Ghost of Christmas past” at the moment going to have a big swig of Venos cough stuff followed by an even bigger swig of Bells for medicinal purposes you understand and to take the taste of the cough bottle out of my mouth.
thanks harry long retired.

Harry never mind, you older fellows have to watch out for your health, :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: but us younger bucks have more resistance,   , believe that,   no I thought not!

Harry you look in fine fettle in the pic taken at the Newcastle do.Glad you made it and enjoyed it,looked a nice do.

hiya,
Yes it was a good “do” Dave did’nt do a head count but it was well supported which is good, met loads of people i recognised and lots of the lads knew mates i had worked with a good day was had by all, looking forward to the next get together in June i think, as you know I did’nt do much journey work prior to retirement (pensioned off at the water board) just the odd job for a pal of mine an OD so lost touch with most of the guys i used to run with and overnight with, yes it’s nice to see friends again.
thanks harry long retired.

Harry & Dave, it is nice to have friends, but the older you get your friends get fewer. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: Like old Tom who is 95, he said to me when he goes to his army reunions, each year it gets smaller. When it was his birthday, I got him a white cardigan with his name Tom Smith& 95, he wears it with pride at the bowling club.    I told him if he reaches 100, I will get him another one, also a Gold Watch, but only if he brings his parents with him. :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Well ,Happy New Year To you over the hill ex-drivers and Keith who is still slaving away. :unamused: :unamused:

Happy new year to all of you that frequent this thread.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Norm my local boozer is giving free drink to all the over 70s this evening but we must be accompanied by both our grandparents.
thanks harry long retired.

Harry that would be a first, that any pubs up your way gave free beer? If true, I am sure you could find some of your older mates to play your grandparents!

hiya,
Had given that idea a good coat of looking at Dave but they was’nt included in the free booze offer so having to buy their drink would have cleaned me out.
thanks harry long retired.

Dave I think it was a excellent idea, you can tell he is not a businessman, for he could have took a few to the pub to get the folks out for a knee’s up, and they would have got him a drink for being a kind helpful person, also he could have worn different hats, with all them OAP’s he could have got several free drinks from the pub! But then he might have been too tipsy to take the old folks back to the home,

hiya,
The last time i was over Bolton would have been about 1972 left the area (Darwen) about then, good night out and was single then, so if it was the weekend and i was off it was usually next day when returning to my own place, happy days. oh and Wood street club Fred Dibnah used to get in there good pal of a mate of mine another steeplejack.
thanks harry long retired.

Al & Harry, I was at the Pally in the seventies up to 75, then back again 78, after dancing to the big bands, used to go to the night club the other end of the building under ground, even my mate in Florida mentioned about my fondest for Bolton when he video called me on New Years Day. Yes Bolton was number 1, Bristol 2, Nottingham 3, Birmingham 4, Exeter 5 Luton 6 London Hammersmith Pally 7, Bradford 8, Blackpool 9 Hull 10, and I danced at many other places, and enjoyed the night out, but in the order I rated them, was because I attended them more! :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

be the Tottenham royal for me in 69 & 70 only old londoners will remember that one some very happy nights in there. fred m

hiya,
See you Norman, you didn’t mention Barrowland Glasgow i’ve danced a few out of there in the 60s, i’d sure rate that at least before Exeter, ah Exeter isn’t that where they stand their dead on street corners and in bus shelters more life on a loppy dog.
thanks harry long retired.

Harry, only went for a dance in Glasgow twice also Stirling three or four times, Inverness twice, Aberdeen & Dundee two or three times,Edingburgh once, Hamilton half a dozen , Tranent four times, Newcastle lost count, Castleford, & Pontefract 5/6 times, by golly how could I miss Doncaster out, I was always in Seventh Heaven!   But I rated the dance hall & local talent and how they treated you.

hiya,
Norm did you get through any work ■■ and did you have any clothes at home ■■ my overnight case was only as big as a sandwich tin so there would be no room for a whistle which would have been good enough for turning out to do the Gay Gordons, tell you what matey after a days graft on some of the things i had to punch about i was glad to have a couple of pints and back to the digs for a kip, guess i was in the wrong job should have been a mattress tester.

Norm,it would only by working for BRS that you could have ever pursued a social life the likes of you have described!!Did you only use the motor as a taxi to get you to the next venue?can’t have done much work that motor!! I bet it was like new!!! Were the sheets ever opened other than to kip under when you couldn’t get back into the digs on a summer night? Cheers Dennis.
