Clubs and Dances, Pubs, were truckers delight

I tell you harry it was very cold, some places in the ground it was a job to stand up, it must have been 1979/ 81 time, then it was only a few bob to get in.

hiya,
You’ve got to be hard to be a football fan in this neck of the woods Norm, when Roker was still the Sunderland ground i got to several games when they was into their cup run in 1973 having just moved to the Durham area at that time but you are right Norm it sure was a cold place.
thanks harry long retired.

Also I went to the old Middleborough ground and saw them play Portsmouth in the late 80’s, I have been to all the old grounds in england.

hiya,
Never been to Middlesborough’s or even Newcastle’s grounds Norm as a kid used to get to Turf Moor a bit lived about five minutes slow walk from there, lived within earshot of Ewood Park later in life but have never watched a game on there, the love of my life is Liverpool lived near Anfield again as a youngster and used to get on there quite a bit, but the people who supported football week in week out with their halfcrowns “the pensioners” cant afford to go anymore i’ts just got too expensive and we all know why.
thanks harry long retired.

Last time I was at Turf moor, was in the 60’s when they was in the first division, their colours are the same as Cobblers, claret, and not the drink.

hiya,
Last time i was on Turf Moor was a Boxing Day friendly Burnley vs Man City and (spelling) Bert Trautman was M Cs goallie he was playing with a surgical collar on his neck, not like today’s fairies they’ve only got to sneeze and they’re wrapped in cotton wool and out of the game for weeks, it’s no wonder it costs a fortune to watch a top game nowadays.

Talking of turf moor,if you came into burnley from accrington, down the hill to the lights were turf moor was on your right.Just before the lights on the right there used to be a cafe[parking was a pain]but what a cracker it was.Can anyone remember the name of it.
regards dave.

hiya,
Knew the cafe very well but the name not, worked in amongst the houses opposite where Fearing’s depot was, and used the cafe when depot bound, that was a long time ago and have a job remembering yesterday.
thanks harry long retired.

Mmmm, Jean’s cafe seems to ring a bell,
a normal breakfast that took you all your time to eat,
or a large one, that I can’t remember any body finishing.

Ray

hiya,
Ray by gosh i think youv’e just given the grey matter a bit of a stir, i did use it frequently Fearing’s yard was only a couple of hundred yards away, in them days a short walk, now more like ten days camel ride.
thanks harry long retired.

Yes ray thats the one, forgot her name but never the breakfasts, cheers mate and a Happy New Year to you all.
regards dave.

See lads, I knew a women was in there somewhere, but at least I pointed you in the right direction, I am still out of the cuckoo land!  :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

hiya,
Back along the same road that Jean’s cafe was on about a mile further up was another little cafe with easy main road parking the guy that ran it was a top class football referee called Alan it was well used by Wilkinsons and Ben Barnes lads and the place although tiny was spotless clean and the grub although limited was excellent, used that one many times in the early 60s when returning to the yards of two or three firms i worked for in those days you could park on either side of the road in those days ideal if you was driving eight leggers with a pup attached.
thanks harry long retired.

Come on Harry Lad, put your flat 60’s/ 70’s thinking cap on while you are in the Burnley area.
Do you remember on the A 56 around the Colne area heading towards Foulridge.
You came up a steep hill with a very tall railway viaduct over on your right and there was a cafe on your left hand side. Lorries used to park on the main road and if you turned left there was a factory down the side street but I can’t remember if it was Brook Bond Oxo, Marmite or Bovril, they did make beef extract there. ( Definitely not Vegemite  ).
Maybe we should get Norman to start an Old Favourite Fish and Chip Shop thread .
I am sure Harry that you will remember the old chippy on Peel Brow in Ramsbottom, if you don’t, then I think that Moomooland might. The fish were always fresh so I dont think that they caught them in the nearby River Irwell. This same chippy or the house before they changed into a chippy was featured in a famous old fifties black and white film but I can’t remember which one. It was something like Saturday Night and Sunday Morning or This Sporting Life or one of those.
Hopefully this little post should help jump start the old grey matter into 2010  .

Regards Steve.

Steve I often go to a Harry Ramsden in Northampton with the wife on a tuesday or thursday and you get it cheaper if a pensioner, fish & chips & mushy peas a slice of bread & butter, and a cup of tea for two for only £9, but only just surpassed by Morrisons famous fish & chips, plus peas, and a pot of tea, after 4-30pm for £7-50 for two. this stems from my boyhood days when you could get fish& chips with batter bits for 8p, that is if you had money, or for tuppence batter bits & chips. chip shops in Glasgow was a little greasey, but the best fish & chips I can say as the best I have tasted, was in Peterhead, the fish was so fresh, it seemed it had just jumped out of the sea into the fryer,Specially in Yorkshire & Lanc’s I have eaten some very good fish & chips, as well as my own town, but that time in the 1969 in Peterhead, will not leave my taste buds.

Hi Norm,
I don’t know about the best, but we were in Whitby summer of 2008,and have never seen a bigger queue for a Chip Shop anywhere,it was packed with one heck of a lot of people outside and down the street, needless to say we didn’t bother, but quite agree about Morrison’s cafe’s,very good value, also tidy food.
Cheers Dave.

Funny that Dave, in Dublin near a cathedral, we saw this queue out side a fish & chip shop, and stood in this queue for half an hour, because we asked, and was told they was the best in Ireland, we had them in paper, and sat in the grounds and they were very good, and a preist came by, and looked, I cheekly said want a chip, and he smiled and took a couple, very nice, that is just what Lord Jesus would have done, I said sorry no relation, poor sod nearly choked. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

When I were a lad our family was always skint. One day I was sent to the local fishmonger who was selling whale meat at two bob a pound. There was an OAP in front of me and she asked for a bob’s worth,so he wrapped some up and said “there’s a bit extra in there for you love, got to help the old folk tha knows, now is there owt else I can get you?”
Answer was “Aye,can I 'ave it’s 'ead fer t’cat”.

True story from Sheffield.
