i just spent the last hour washing and polishing my van…It looks very smart and shiny .till next time i have to go to a building site
- As a agency driver again, i leave the inside as i find them. I’ll clear out my mess, but won’t lift other peoples crap. Worst ive driven was a truck from Christian Salveston, where the passenger well was filled with empty packets of crisps, cans of juice, chip wrapers, the steering wheel was covered in grease, and the floor was used as an ashtray. When i first got in, i touched the steering wheel and my hands were black i drove it with my gloves on ! since whoever was using it before me was doing the same. Was an old X-reg motor.
When i had my own motor working with a company i’d keep the inside clean as i was living it, but wouldnt polish or that.
- Last place i worked full time you got £15 a week extra for keepin the inside clean and washing the truck. Wasn’t tax free and sometimes i wouldnt bother. Somtimes after a long week, when its freezin cold, ■■■■■■ with rain the last thing i wanna do is handwash a truck. They had a jetwash but we werent allowed to use it on the trucks incase it took the paint off ! I offered to come in 30mins early before the start of the week and do it but was told don’t bother. But mostly i did wash the truck.
Somerfields, used to put the truck through the truckwash regularly as it was a good way to get a bit of OT when things were quiet.
- Incentive, well not leaving litter and leaving the inside as a pig sty, shouldnt need an incentive. Paying drivers an extra is a good way to keep the trucks clean. Another way would be not to give the messy drivers new trucks, give the clean drivers new trucks, and let the messy drivers use their old ones.
Some places tho, you find apart from messy trucks you get trucks which have been vandelised. At somerfields we believed someone was vandelising the trucks, because every single cover off the gear knob went missing, the interior lights kept on getting smashed, heater knobs pulled off.
Well they say ‘Pride comes before a Fall’ and it certainly did for my hubby. Last week he was cleaning his wheels and had left his locker open, and yes, you guessed it, he hit his head when standing up. No, it did not knock any sense into his head, but a bad cut with lots of blood. A very kind lady in a cafe got her first aid kit out and cleaned the cut for him and he was very grateful as he could not see the cut himself. So drivers who take pride in their trucks, watch out when you are cleaning.
My first ever proper driving job, we were expected to come in on a Saturday morning and wash the wagons off, it wasnt that much of a chore as we all got together and had a brew and a laugh and it only took a couple of hours.
As for incentives■■? it depends whether your a “carrot” or a “stick” person. We didnt get our pay packet until all the wagons were washed. This was in the days when you got a pay packet and not a BACS transfer. Needless to say the wagons sparkled!!!
Seemed to work at that firm.
