Class1 newbie

Doing my class 1 next week Monday to Thursday test on Friday.

I live in derby can you throw same names at me to apply to once I pass that will take on new class 1’s.

I have a lorry loader with brick grab licence.

I’ve been class 2 at a builders merchant for 4 years nearly and want to step up to the big stuff :open_mouth:

Ideally day shifts, will consider anything really but not into tramping really, don’t think it would suit my home life. I like the novelty of it, but long term it’s not for me.

Any suggestions.

Anyone■■?

No disrespect to you jase, but i think you`ll be given more credence once you have actually passed. Put some searches in, and trawl the newbie section for a wealth of info!

Good luck for next week mate!!

Welcome Along fella,Can’t really help you on the job situation, from what I’ve seen co-op at jct 28 M1 seems to always be after drivers…I know not technically Derby but close enough if you live at the right end of Derby.

There are a few, Taylors, Meachers, Co-op, DHL, K&N, plenty around Derby pal.

Thanks guys hopefully come Friday afternoon I’ll be knocking on doors

NR Evans at Hilton always used to take newbies when I did a 3 month stint in there 2 years ago, that’s both agency and permanent depending which you want. Would hazard a guess that things haven’t changed because more and companies across the industry are relaxing the “experience” thing due to struggling to putting bums on seats. Be warned though, they pay a day rate - and it was usually for a reason. Permanent drivers were on £120 a day, 5 on 3 off no matter what day was worked. Agency was £110 Mon-Fri, £120 Saturday, £140 Sunday. Rates may have improved but I haven’t been in there since late 2013. Not great money when compared to the hourly rate but it may offer you a start until you can move onto better things.

As has already been mentioned, Co-op at M1 junction 28 are always looking and there are numerous agencies round the area that continually advertise for drivers - not 100% certain whether they take newbies though. Taylors at Huthwaite - again they take new drivers but they do have a slightly bad reputation from what I have read on here, I personally can’t pass judgement as never been in there so that may be grossly unfair. Further afield you have Sports Direct at Shirebrook too.

I can’t help other than that as I’m actually North Leicestershire myself so know more about my way. Calsdad, who sometimes posts on here is in your area and has good experience of all the companies and/or agencies to work for. Also war1974 is another regular - He actually runs an agency somewhere in the Derby/Nottingham area so even if your not looking for agency work he may be a good bet to advise of more companies who will take new drivers.

cheers tm, I have spoken to jase and if he does need any help just drop me a line, Meachers take on, K&N (see me for that one  ) wests, co-op via agency.

if it helps had a lad last week do similar and he passed his assessment straight away (went class 2 to 1) so best of luck.

there are also quite a few more towards burton way too who will take on - depends what sort of class 1 you want.

Yeah that’s true about Burton and also if its not too far to travel for you Coalville is another good one - there is loads and loads of places there and surely you’d be able to get in somewhere.

If possible I’d avoid agencies, start by applying direct…sure the agencies will offer you those phantom 12 wk temp to perm contracts where after 11 weeks mysteriously you are not required by that particular outfit anymore but as if by magic they have lined you up another 12wk temp to perm contract elsewhere.

depends on the agency - I have 1 member on here in full time employment at one of the companies mentioned, actually I have placed about 7 drivers into the site.

honest :open_mouth:

Thanks guys. 1st day went well drove forward absolutely fine no issues at all, to point the instructor if I continue this standard he predicts a pass with zero driver faults
Backwards was rather different, I’ve never towed anything, I was ok but certainly a learning curve :open_mouth:

I have an in with via family member at a local DHL site and been told as soon as I pass to go and see them and we’ll go from there

If doesn’t work out for whatever reason I will approach the above,

Many thanks

best of luck DHL will assess you but the guys (depending on which site) are pretty fair and will take into account the newbie factor. having said that I am pretty sure its 6 months before you can try again if you fail (might be different depending on who you know).

No one can predict that. A lot of the driving test and indeed any driving on any day depends on what happens at the time. There are so many variables, car cutting you up, a lady riding a horse, a bus parked in an awkward spot (which happened to me) Keep clear signs spacing awkwardly between traffic lights and then made impossible by a HGV 2 parked hazards flashing delivering to the shop but you have already truned the corner and now see an impossible situation before you. Also each person reacts differently with nerves, I don’t get nervous at all as I pretend it is a normal day and take no notice of him sat there. The reason I passed car, motorbike, HGV 3, PSV and class 1 first time is because I controlled my nerves but some go to pieces and drive nothing like they have practiced. The best advice I can give to you is take your time and do not rush anything.

the fan belt snapped a couple of miles out on my first test and was abandoned :smiling_imp:

passed my retest though

Couldn’t you take your tights off and use them?

I only had my stockings on and didn’t want them dirty.

Now there’s an image that I didn’t want in my head  A lorry driver wearing suzies
