Hi All, been here a while (trying to keep my neck wound in
) soaking up the knowledge.
And the time has come (aged 44
) for me to get a start (Or I will when the DVLA give me my plastic licence back
).
I’ve learnt from this forum that probably the best thing for me to do, is go knock on the transport office doors of my local companies. (Before i hit the agencies!) So i’d like to ask the experienced drives (who know all the firms) who close to me might be worth a knock & crazy enough to employ me. I’m in Totton Southampton, so Nursling Industrial estate is close by etc…
As for what I’m looking for: I’m not that fussy as long as it’s a decent start. I know i have Bidvest/3663 in Andover, Brakes in Eastleigh and P&H in Fareham, but i’d like to initially see if I can find something closer to home, and hasn’t been slagged off so much on here! (OK, I am fussy!
)
As for what would be ideal, I quite fancy tippers, as know the building industry, and happy to work nights as I’m single. May as well, as going to bed early for a 4-6am start is practically nights anyway!
-
So with that in mind, and to save me the rather tedious and laborious task of knocking on the doors exclusively C+E only outfits, i’d welcome any suggestions on a Class C start.
P.S. I’ve got ADR as well, but can’t see anyone being crazy or desperate enough to put a zero experience Newbie in a fuel wagon!

Thanks people!
Not sure where their office is in Southampton (or if they have even got one there) but you could try Maritime

Thanks, yes they are. And I had the belief they were C+E only. Ta!

Yes you are right, sorry…just re-read your post, you don’t want C+E

No worries, thanks anyway. - And yes, I’m only a 2nd class Trucker at present!
Maritime is located in Nursling Ind Est. They overtook Roadways Container yard
Try Williams Shipping in Manor House Avenue, Millbrook. They’re a good company, and always worth a look.
Don’t forget, 3663 have a depot at Downton - not too far from Totton.

Thanks nightmail, and yes, but I was trying to forget about them!
(Until it’s agency time…
)
I don’t know where my post went but I suggested a couple of tipper firms. Sibleys are at Nursling and TJ Transport. Both have been advertising recently on Indeed.
18t pallet work - there’s loads in the Southampton area and Eastleigh and a lot of them had boards outside their yards looking for drivers.

I must admit, I haven’t been properly out and about yet, as I wanted to go out ready to roll if i was asked to do an assessment drive there and then. I was just asking if there was anything other than the pallet work of Bidvest, 3663 & Brakes close to me that i should consider…
Thanks!
Well, if I’m right in thinking, Bidvest 3663 and Brakes would be cage work, not pallet.
Pallet work uses curtain side trucks mainly, although cage and pallet vehicles have a tail lift in common.
Sorry, i thought Bidvest was mainly pallet loaded goods, followed by hand balling it off the other end. (From what I’ve read on this forum). I believe P&H is cages though, but again from what I’ve read on here…
So sorry i misunderstood you, thanks!
Try TJ they tend to give new drivers a go. SIG are worth trying - they’re on Nursling Ind. Est. AFS in Fair Oak, Youngs in Eastleigh are another couple worth looking at. You may find it worth trying an agency just for some temporary work just to be paid in the meantime… Good luck!
If you decide to go agency try manpower in Eastleigh and try and get on the Royal Mail contract. The yard is in Marchwood.

Thanks pal, I’ll give them a go when I get my licence back.
And thanks Mailman, I’ll probably sign on with Manpower first if I have to resort to agency…

You’ll be treated like a 2nd Class citizen when you start.

And your point is? - Also, I suspect you and I have a slightly different perception, on what being treated like a 2nd Class citizen is anyway…
To be honest (as I try to be) I really don’t care if someone talks down to me in such a scenario, as it won’t make a blind bit of difference to me. In fact, it will probably amuse me that they feel the need to try and impress of impose themselves on me. I simply won’t care…
It’s a state of mind pal, you should really try it. You will be happier, I promise!!!
