Hi all. Ever since decided to do my HGV licence I’ve wanted to do some tramping work. I love the idea of being out in lorry for entire week. Always have fancied it. I’m currently on tippers!!! Anyone got any thoughts on who might use class 2 trampers? And what money be like?
Just enquiry at min as want bit more experience on tippers for wee while.
Couple of points from one who’s done it; Haulfast (UPS Distribution) , Owens, Llanelli and my current employer.
You’re less likely to be away all week unless you’re with a firm that’s specialising in a particular niche market.
You are about right in your assessment of rate vs perks etc. The trick is to avoid counting your night out money, parking etc as part of your wages, otherwise you’ll get a skewed idea of what you’re earning and if work goes quiet meaning no nights away it’ll mess your budget up.
Unless you’re VERY lucky you won’t get a premium cab; most of the rigid sleepers on the roads are basic “flat-tops”, trust me although they’re a vast improvement on what I had when I started, the novelty soon wears off!
On the upside, you’re usually less restricted with a rigid regarding parking; inasmuch as you can get off the beaten track a bit and find some really pleasant places to stay. This might sound strange to some but my view’s always been that if you’ve got to be away from home you might as well turn it to your advantage if you can.
Try Welch’s Transport, they have a few rigids on distance work. Or Payne’s near Sandy.
My last job was tramping in a 6 legger. Only £27 p wk less than the artics & a ■■■■ sight easier to get parked up at night. My 1st ever job was also tramping in a 6 legger & both of these jobs were great, good kit & lots of variety & also tramping round the by roads where artics fear to tread . Only left my last job in january as I was made an offer I could’t refuse.
Good luck & if you find the right employer I’m sure you’ll love it.
Thats great guys thank you very much. A lot of useful info there. Really want to do it. Love the idea of being away and waking up in new place every day. See guys parked up for night and get really jealous.
Have been looking at class 2 sleepers on road and as said many of them are not “premium” cabs.
Have every intention of doing class 1 but same old story, it’s £££ at the min. Might hold off till get that under me belt see if can’t get into something on bigger stuff. Sony know why but fancy container work. Not a clue why though!!!
i got lucky mate, after doing a few months agency work was offered a job driving a new erf rigid (04 plate). took that job and did maybe 3 nights out a week and once a week was multi drop round central london which i was paid an extra £40 per week of the boss as the customer was made up with the job we were doing. was on that truck for around 10 months then boss paid for me to do my C+E. i enjoyed the job but stobarts came a calling and i went there…we all make mistakes…lol
