Class 2 skip work

Not had the pleasure before. Anything I need to know? Got a 2 week assignment off agency.

I’m a new pass (3 months)

Serious as well as humorous replies welcome.

If you are doing dirty work then wear gloves and keep them outside the cab. This way your wheel and controls dont get contaminated with whatever is on the back.

You’ll either love it or hate it. I did it then left but missed the variety of jobs so went back to it. Some days you’ll get some really tight stressful jobs, don’t panic or you’ll end up doing damage. If you don’t think you can do it be honest don’t try to be a hero better they send someone with experience than paying for damage. Whos it with?

Main thing to remember is ensure the skip not been overloaded by the hirer sticking old doors or boards down the sides to raise the height. It it has ask them to reduce the load or leave it there. If there lightweight stuff in skip, plasterboard etc spend a minute dropping a net over it. Be aware that police and councils regularly target skip wagons, so keep it legal.

It’s working for a firm called SC Chadwicks in Leigh, Gtr Mcr.

Some handy tips. Cheers lads

Don’t forget to attach “tip trophies” to the wagon; Old cuddly toys, dolls and I’ve even seen a ■■■■■ strapped to the Merc badge before. Any copper pipe, stainless steel taps etc chuck in the passenger footwell and take home (weigh in once or twice a year and pay off your weeks holiday :sunglasses: ) Use the dusty interior for drawing maps, making notes etc. Dirty books are filed in the mess room (or if it’s “granny ■■■■” filed in someone elses cab. )
You’ll never need a litter bin, chuck it in a carrier bag then into the next skip.

Put blocks down on a drive if you need to use your rear legs… I learnt the hard way haha and get some chocks!!!

Be wary of skips with soil in them, chances are they are going to be stupidly heavy.

Not forgetting the “Skippy” plate in the windscreen :open_mouth:

I will be starting on RORO skips tomorrow as well, I’ve been doing class 1 stuff, including ADR, but I fancy trying other work and seeing what it’s all about, I’m hoping to move into tipper work at some point. Any more help you guys can give will always be appreciated.

All I will say is treat a skip wagon with respect, if you get too ■■■■ sure it will bite you in the ■■■, I’ve done it for past year on and off and still learning… Any questions ask your gaffer, they’d rather you ask then trash someone’s drive etc! It’s defo the best work I did with class 2 (I like a challenge)

Skips

When you trying to tip and your leaning to one side, drop leg on this side help with getting the skip on hooks, same applies when putting skip on to wagon so you not rubbing on arms

RoRo

Make sure you tip it on level ground, specially with heavy metal sheets, any tipping work works like that but is easy forgotten, also treat it as top heavy

If when driving a Roro and it’s being used as a normal 8wheeler tipper, only use the smallest skip possible (12m3 or whatever they’re known as, they look like a normal tipper) or you’ll be well overweight. Your gaffer will probably charge it as an 8wheeler load but you’ll only be able to carry about 15-16t.

Good stuff. Appreciate it

Well spent all day tipping ■■■■■■■■ and soil at local quarries in this old girl

Belongs in a museum in all honesty. Didn’t do any ROROing just used it as a tipper.

That’s the size skip body I was on about, less chance of an overload. Those old MANs were bombproof on tipper work. :sunglasses:

Well I made it through day one, no major dramas, and frankly I found it to be quite interesting. I did plenty of ROROing, 6 exchanges at various places, mostly tight spots and almost all needed shunting around due to only having room for 1 skip. It has been mentioned how sites like to park/build/dump and generally clutter the place up in front of skips, and I see what they mean. But I still enjoyed it, here’s hoping it’s a longer lasting affair than the current 10 week plan.

If you have extenders on your skip wagon, on exchanges I try drop the empty on top, pick up both, shorten chains on empty skip and bobs your uncle, no having to pull out etc  be very careful though!!!

Is skip work generally low paid? Found out the full timers are on £7 p/h. Some of them drive wagon and drags to :astonished:

My £10 p/h plus expenses went down like a lead balloon!

Your rate is about right for here, although that’s because a 10 hour day is the maximum.
For £7 per hour their wagons must be weighed down with the CDC catelogue.
