Class 2 jobs

Only had my licence just over a month and already thinking about finding work doing something else, i got my licence under the impression that there was a need for truck drivers, but so far since passed my test i have been offered nothing but pure utter dog ■■■■■ jobs with absolute terrible hrs that are not possible to pay bills, im mostly sitting by a phone waiting on some ■■■■■■■■ from an agency promising me theres class 2 ongoing work 45 to 50 hrs a week, with 6 am star at 10 pound a hr, then you get to the job site and the transport manager tells u to be there for a 4am start in future and its job and finish with majority of 6hr shift 3 or 4 days a week at 8.50 per hr in a sprinter van or 7.5t [emoji23][emoji848] seriously losing patience fast, absolute let down of a start so far in this new career, all i have managed to do since passing test is get into debt because of these recruitment agency jobs bunch of dirty lying snakes, is agency work the only way to go when your a newbie driver ■■

If you’re not bothered about getting your hands (and everything else) dirty, there is a very large drainage company always looking for drivers.

It’s quite literally a ■■■■ job but you’ll always have work.

Alternatively, try recycling firms. Skips are a great way to learn a lot in a short time. What part of the country are you in?

You don’t normally get the V8 jacket and dealer boots until the ink dries, start knocking on doors and talk to other drivers, rigid work has always been the last motor out unless you want to try tippers, it always helps with a location too.

There has never been a shortage of drivers, just a shortage of drivers who will put up with crap pay and jumping hoop legislation while doffing your cap to teenagers

Someone mentioned to me to try skip companies tbh i quite fancy tipper jobs only problem so far is only ones i have been told about are 50 minute dtive from glasgow and was told there 12 to 15 hr shifts im online looking just now to try find one bit nearer glasgow and gonna go old fashioned route and had in CVs because these agencies are gonna make me go bankrupt all they do is lie i was told there was on going pallatised work so been doing that for last week and a half but then today agency said company dont need me rest of the week so i asked the boy in work if it was anything to do with my performance and he said no not at all we would have you back again it was just temporary for someone off on holiday, but agency told me it was on going work so now im again back to looking for work [emoji1361]

Which is a shortage of drivers

Yeah been on indeed and total jobs but again mostly agency stuff and i apply for the job the agency call and ask me to register then once im registered they say the job i applied for is no longer available and they then try push me to do 160 drop a day multidrop for yodel in a sprinter van, then majority say need 6 months to a year before they get you class 2 work

That is simply how agencies work, and I detest them for it. This time of year though mate, good time to get a foot in a door. If you can, avoid small agencies. The big-name ones are the best of a (very) bad bunch.

I wouldnt mind if they jusy told the truth if they just said listen mate its 4am start at 8.75 an hr then i would be like fine i need the work so im not gonna grumble, but it’s the lies and messing with your lively hood that gets me, telling me one thing then wen you get to the site to find out its totally different

CO-OP newhouse give them a try.
I’m sure they are after drivers. Money is decent as well.

Honestly if you just want clean work and decent money do supermarket.

Co-op, Newhouse
NHS, Larkhall (probably agency but they have rigids)
SNT, Shotts

For tippers, there’s the quarry at Floak. And there’s also the quarry run by Hillhouse at Dundonald. There’s also Beyard(spelling) who are based in Paisley some where. Try Tam Moffat at Coatbridge.

Learn polish■■? Sorry, couldn’t resist.
Seriously though, supermarkets that run rigids like co-op would be my first port of call. I’d be surprised if they don’t have a depot in or near you in, did you say Glasgow? Going in person to see them rather than just posting your cv shows more enthusiasm in my opinion. On the run up to Christmas you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding something in the retail sector I’d have thought.

You should think about getting your ADR. That would give you a chance to get onto class 2, oil tankers, gas tankers, gas cylinders etc…stuff like that usually pays quite well

You’re on a learning curve that is steep at first but it does get easier as you go on. Sadly, many drivers are so dumb that they are unable to work it out & they stay perpetually on agency hopping from 1 bad job to the next, moaning & whingeing on social meedya about how bad their lot in life is.

As a newly qualified driver it’s best to have at least some experience of temping, if only to work out exactly what type of driving you want to do & equally as important . . . what type you DON’T want to do.

I give you important tip No’1 : You will come across the 2yr experience brick wall, without 2yrs experience nobody will give you a chance. This isn’t personal & it doesn’t reflect that they have sufferred from poor drivers with no experience, it is an insurance policy stipulation. The policy T&C’s state that drivers should have 2yrs experience & 6pts or less. There are ways around this but they cost LOTS of money in increased premiums, the Co’s that are willing to pay this are usually the Co’s that HAVE to pay . . . . because no self respecting driver with 2yrs+ under their belt will work for them.

It’s a hard sell though laying out more money when he’s not even set on currently. I know speculate to accumulate and that but if you’ve bugger all accumulated then you can’t speculate.

To the OP… try pallet network type places. It’ll be rubbish but, and it’s a big but, you’ll likely be given a start as those jobs tend to churn drivers, it will be steady away and you’ll be doing semi-reasonable hours (in comparison with the bulk of the industry).

Yeah after spending best part of 1600 on the licence im not in a position to spend another 6 or 7 on adr, i will get the adr in the future but just need to start seeing a return on the money already laid out, so far im basically earing same money as i was just above minimum wage in a warehouse, because all im getting is 3 or 4 day week, just went to malcoms tippers and applied in there the TM said wont hear back till after xmas now

Good transport jobs are usually spoken for.Newbies are usually offered the EARTH by Agencies same as the belief that London`s streets are paved with GOLD
where as in reality thats far from the truth.

Basically you are right, but it isn’t as absolute as you make out. I’ve taken on a 23 year old and two 24 year olds in the past on Class 1. They didn’t have experience beyond van driving. The insurance increased the excess by £500.00, which we factored in and crossed fingers that we wouldn’t have to pay it. We didn’t HAVE to take on youngsters because no one else would, we only employ on recommendation(full disclosure, one of the 24 years olds our TM met while he was working for a subbie as a casual). So you can get on at a decent firm, but in fairness we are a rare and dying breed.

As for ADR, I’d say that a decent firm will put you through yours. I’d rather take on the right driver with no ADR which we need, than the wrong driver with an ADR.

Going back to the lad our TM met, yes he was doing casual work, yes it was half labour half driving, but he was cheerful and pleasant as well as hard working, so whilst you might feel that every job you are doing is rubbish, you never know who you are meeting and where a job offer may come from.
