Class 2 18 tonner

Turning the steering wheel. And turning it. And turning it. And heading towards the wall at the other side of the road because it needs a weeks written notice and the same amount of room as an oil tanker to make a left hand turn.

Steering lock, they’ve heard of it, they just don’t have any.

If your any good

Are ya■■? :smiling_imp:

Get used to slipping the clutch and crunching those synchromesh gears, that’s the trend with the small engined 6 speed box ones that I see .

I remember when i was at Panic Link as a loader & drivers mate in the 90’s
They had Erfs, 4 over 4 with the range change, i’ll always remember this know it all agency driver who thought the range changer was a half split :unamused:
High range to low range at speed :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Yer, I could get my tail swing in ya aunty fannys clunge and back out again without her noticing

I do love my Scania’s sneaky range change invisible gear at the most interesting moments :imp: 4over 4

Just don’t try to screw it round in a tight-ish road. Oil tankers have tighter turning circles than some 18 tonners!

Be careful not to cause trouble! You’ve brought to mind something that happened to my late brother years ago. He was between driving jobs, went on Bass Charrington at a country depot as a mate on an urban artic dray, little Bedford TK, 10 ton payload, nice job, good money, stays there. Comes the summer, on a Friday he got called into the office. The manager said “Fred, you’re a driver, how’d you like to help us out next week, holiday cover for a fortnight, driver’s money”? Bruv says “sorry, I’ve only got a class 3, or I would”. Manager gets on the blower, comes back a few minutes later. " No problem, I’ll run you down the station, get on a train to Park Royal, they’re lending us a four wheeler". So down to London he goes, comes back in a Bedford KM, 10 ton payload. Next week, he’s on the road, comes Friday, drivers pay as promised. Goes into work Monday, they’re on strike, shop steward found out they’d paid him artic money for driving a four wheeler, there was a little bit of difference but the manager didn’t realise as they only had artics there! The only way they could resolve it was if bruv agreed to take less money the next week, he wasn’t much bothered so agreed and finished the week. Manager then sent him to their driving school to upgrade to class 1. He soon found himself driving full time when somebody left. Said he wished he’d been on artics years ago, as those little ones got round much easier than a four wheeler, wages should be the other way round!

I hope that he doesn’t get in an eight legger then!

Pete.

I remember my old man coming off the artic that he been on for 5 years and going on to a foden eight wheeler block lorry. The first roundabout near the yard required two shunts to get round as he lined himself up wrong

After years of driving artic’s, I moved up to rigids 4 years ago and it was the best move I ever made. There’s no amount of money would make me go back down to driving an artic. Why anyone would choose to Rs about winding legs up and down and risk getting caked in grease from suzies is beyond me

On the plus side, if it weren’t for artic drivers, I wouldn’t have half as much enjoyment watching them attempting to reverse in the services :open_mouth: :unamused: :grimacing: .

Same as an XF unit then

Quite enjoy driving rigids and get the same rate anyway. I’d much rather pallet truck the load off a rigid than a decker trailer.

Good point about the legs, grease etc.

Here Here! I sometimes get asked to drive a rigid at the place I do agency, the first time very tentatively, when I enquired why, the girl in the office said some of the class ones here wont drive them, is the rate the same I asked ,yes she said, well sign me up says I and if that happens in the future feel free to put my name down.

Its funny to see one of the artic lads try and drive one. They get into such a pickle going backwards.

It’s quite funny watching an artic driver trying to back a draw bar & rigid ,they turn the wheel far too much .

Oh dear!!! what am I going to do tomorrow?? 18 months after I retired I’m going back to work for the day :open_mouth: :open_mouth: what will I do? will it be an artic? will it be a rigid? is it manual or auto? will I get lost? should I rush out and buy a pratnav?
Nahhhh! I’ll just get on with it. Kevmac47. :unamused: :unamused:
