CLASS 1 - Looking for work in Sheffield

I’ve just passed my Class 1 test and I’m in need of a new job bcos my current place don’t need anymore drivers on the artics

Currently I have an interview and assessment drive with Newell & Wright on Thursday, but I’m looking for more places that would take a driver with no Class 1 experience.

I’ve been driving 18T rigids for about 8 months; more recently I’ve been out tramping in London mostly and a bit of North Wales. It’s flatbed working with mainly steel. I’d happily take flatbed work on the artics but I have no idea which company would take new drivers on. Everywhere I look want either 6 months or 1 year.

If anyone knows of any company in the Sheffield area let me know please!

Thanks,

Michal S

Try R. Plevin & Sons at Crow Edge, walking floor class 1 work, dirty, dusty, horrible work delivering biomass to the power station opposite Meadowhall.I started there no experience and they still take drivers with no experience. worked 3 1/2 years for them. £38,323.00. Look under total jobs website.

Do they still have manual sheeting? I’ve just read that some guy died falling from the trailer whilst sheeting it. Decent pay tho… a lot better than owt I could find tbf

Most trailers I believe are now auto sheet, but since the death all drivers have to wear harness and attach to by-line to go up to do roof if you have a manual roof trailer.
I had auto sheet before I left, but there were a number of trailers on order and they are now in the fleet.

Make no mistake, they’ll want their pound of flesh out of you especially since they’ve put their salary up, that’ll killed the Plevin brothers having to do that, but they can’t get/keep drivers.
In the last 18 months before I left 50+ hgv drivers left, yes 50+ some didn’t last more than a day.
Start time is between 4-5am. 55 hours a week, 12hr + days will be planned for you, but stick to your guns and say no.
You will also go to collect scrap wood from the tightest yards that really an artic shouldn’t really be sent and some weighbridges are a nightmare. I don’t mind admitting that I used to feel physically sick when I first started when I was told to go to certain yards. But after time you get used to it and then don’t think about it.
