Clarke Transport

Clarke Transport are opening up a depot near me in Mid June and are asking for ADR Driver (all classes). Can anyone give me the heads up please with regard to pay, nights out, conditions etc
Cheers Pete

Which Clarke and where is the depot they are opening?

Main depot in brum but have depots all over like ossett, southampton etc

Don’t think they do much in terms of night - out … trucks are double shifted doing night trunks between their depots.

PM Hyper26 as he drives for them, well he did on Friday as he hooted at me at the lights (hi Chris)

I worked for them in wishaw . The tm was an absolute ■■■■ . If you arrived at work at 7:01 ( start at 7 ) he docked you 15 mins then you had to wait 45mins on a forklift to load yourself !

Nearly applied for that job a few years back.
Lucky escape by the sounds of it…

There’s much worse than that mate , I could tell you a few stories that would make your hair curl !

Oh don’t I know. Been there and done that many times over many years.

I did 10 years with them at Ossett, and I have to say, they weren’t that bad to work for.

Old man Clarke was a great bloke, ala Stan Robinson if you like, old school and knew all the tricks, but if you did your job, then they left you alone.

His sons, Billy and Robert run it nowadays, and they have their brood working their now, so don’t know what it would be like, but I’m not a big lover of daddy’s boys, as you don’t know what sort of tales they go running with.

I have a mate who currently works there, and saw him a few months ago, and they are on circa £10ph, but with very little overtime, and I think your guranteed 50 hours per week. Sat mornings are optional, and at Ossett it was usuaully because the night shift hadn’t finished loading the vehicles, and you were guaranteed 4 hours for it.

Majority of the t/units are double shifted, whereby they do deliveries on days, and trunking on nights. No nights out these days, although when I started, we used to do 2 nights out per week, until they opened Manchester, and then got Lescost on as a subby on Tyneside.

They do a lot of adr, and if you haven’t got it, they will put you through it, but beware. They right it off over 5 years, and if you leave, you pay it back pro rata. Even after 10years service, I paid 2 years back when I left.

Interested to know where the new depot is, because they use a network of subby hauliers to get their deliveries done, and iirc, the last one they opened was Bridgend, and that was some time ago.

Was never the case at Ossett, as it was swing’s and roundabouts.

Thanks for your comments guys - Don’t think I’ll bother with the application. The new site will be at Barton Le Clay (just north of Luton) which is scheduled to open mid-June.

Quinny, do you know if they take on new drivers? I’ve just applied as I live about 10mins from them, looking at the website in quite impressed’

Don’t know what the policy is anymore, as it’s 12 years since I left.

What I do know is, if you started on rigids, (Like I did.) and pass your test, you are chaperoned on the big stuff for about a week.

The thing is, they know that the driver market is a bit saturated at the moment, and they will probably have enough experienced bods to pick from, but don’t let that put you off. See what happens as a result of your application.

I worked for them first on agency then I applied for a job and got it was supposed to be rigids but when I started was given an artic and off I went. I got my ADR thanks to the govt and even though I was not on the 2 year magic number experiance they gave me a start. I was at Oldbury (head office) and basically I worked hard and got paid well £10 ph was fixed hours on days 7am till 5.30pm but usually finished after that and had overtime paid at normal rate but you did the work and worked hard you were paid well and left alone. I was let go but if they had vacancies I would go back its a no brainer learnt the trade and the lads were great.
