Cigi lighter sockets on volvo 12v or 24

Anyone know if i plug in a 12volt cool box to my volvo cigi lighter if it will fry it or not

last time i looked it was 24v, safe one is marked 12v.

Model & age ?

Older FM & FH the lighter socket is usually 12V with 24V on the back wall, but you have to check for yourself .

Newer FM & FH there are two sockets lighter is 24V and there’s another that’s 12V, far as I know.

Its V reg mate but i use a satnav so surely that must mean its a 12volt

the lighter socket on newer fm/fh are marked but the one nearer passenger side is normally 12 volt.

sat nav can run off 12v and 24v.satnav usally have it marked on power cable if it is 12/24 volt check for your own safety.

most sat navs use a power rating from. about 6 volts upto 30 volts ,so dont use that as a measure, best bet is to get an electrician to check it .

I can plug mine in 12 or 24V, so I don’t think you can go by that, as said

V-Reg is the FH 1, 24V on the back wall.

Just bear in mind everyone, that most are like that, but, some could have been altered.

Don’t be a tight wad,and buy a Ā£4.99 multi meter off your local market, then you can check any vehicle that you get into.

Ken.

^^^^ HOW MUCH Ken ā– ā– ? Last one I got on sale was an extortionate Ā£2.49. Surely there must be something in the pound shop…

You can do it cheaper than that, 1x 24 volt bulb, 2 bits of wire. Attach wires to bulb and make contact with socket. If it is 24 volts bulb is bright, 12 volts it isn’t. Job done.

i thought i was the only one tight enough to do it like that

Q suggest’s EXTREME CAUTION

As it un-usual to find any 12 Volt sockets fitted in any wagon above 7500kg mass (including new ones)

Usually ALL the ā€œHGV’sā€ have 24volt Cigarette’lighter & Hela sockets // unless marked otherwise

If your considering probing around to test the voltage
BEWARE // They pack quiet a PUNCH

( Poking around using odd pieces of wire or Test-Meter probes)
** !! NOT RECOMENDED !!**

The initial ( short-circuit ) peak current, could be hundreds of AMPS
during the 0.5(ish) Second it takes for the fuse to blow.

SO: (assuming a higher rated fuse hasnt been fitted by mistake)

at BEST, there will be a short shower of white hot sparks.

AT WERSE, there be a longer shower of white hot sparks,
the ā€œleadsā€ will weld to the connection, and then melt in your hands !!
Serious damage could quickly follow
As the wagons other electical wiring also joins in the display

Either way ( Double NOT-Recommended)
as your ā€œhandsā€/fingers & face/eyes are likely to be in close proximity
And if you start an electrical fire, your going to need to make a quick exit :frowning:

The best and safest option is to carry a voltage’droper / convertor.
( fitted with a universal plug (ie fits Cigy lighter or Hela))

This is a good one // costs about £20
maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Mod … r&doy=30m6
Also available from Truck’Stops // there is a also a lower power (5A) version

[ Also see previous tread trucknetuk.com/phpBB2/viewtopic. … highlight= ]

As it comes with a universial plug (fits correctly into either type of socket)

It also makes a great (safe) ā€œTest the Voltageā€ device,

** Just plug it in **

If the cooling fan spins up, and the light comes on
Then you just pluged it into a [live] 24Volt Socket

If nothin happens: Either:
The socket is Dead (not live, try turning on the ignition)
Or its a 12 volt socket.

2Q’s answer: Good Chance it will be a 24volt socket, so [YES] your roost the pump’motor

just use hella plugs. buy a twin ended converter lead  no messing as those always seem marked up!
