Chuckie Chicken.

Some of the visitors to this forum might be interested, (or possibly, they might not be!) to know that one bus in the Chuckie Chicken fleet was FDL 927D, ex Southern Vectis 806. This 1966 Bristol MW was sold to J.P.Woods, via a dealer in Barnsley, in 1977. In 1988, it was sold back to Southern Vectis for their heritage fleet. in 1997, when this fleet was disbanded, it was loaned to The Isle of Wight Bus Museum and sold to us in 2001. The attached photo was taken on April 1st this year at Newport Quay. The bus was repainted into the livery of The Enterprise Bus Company, which ceased trading in 1950, following accident damage in 2008.

We have entered this bus in the London to Brighton Run organised by The Historic Commercial Vehicle Society, on Sunday May 6th, providing our mechanic can fix the slipping clutch problem in time!

Hello all, Chuckie Chciken, J P Woods, later Unilever, their admirable Transport Manager was Ted Jones, a man full of expertise, and potential, stullified by the normal lousey British Corporate Management, (how cheaply can we do it)!!! What potential wasted! ■■■■ Phillips, (B&W Motors, Derry Street Wolverhampton), sold them their first Scania, (110), later as Chris obtained the Scania Franchise, Mike Kelly followed on with 111s. The trunking system employed by Ted was quite sophisticated, particularly given the “awfull” road system that had to be used between Craven Arms and Anglesey. What a shame our beloved retail sector discovered “cheap” chicken, initially from the Eastern Block, and now the far East! and Chuckie was no more. The site is now BritParts, Landrover bits. Cheerio for now.

One of Britpart’s from The Grove,Craven Arms.

Anyone remember Bill Jepson, worked for Chukie in Anglesea.Big into his motor bikes?Used to meet him in Holyhead dock drivers waiting room regularly.

I remember , j p Woods having 4 new M A Ns bulkers on 24 ,7 to Anglesey ,used to be serviced by S ? R Motors near us ,just a bit of useles info yours B arry Waddy

I can remember following one of their Scania 111’s towards Bettws Y Coed years ago,not a lot of room for error.

There was a very interesting article about them in Truck Magazine in the mid eighties when they were trialing Scania,MAN,& Mercedes for future purchases. Some great photos too.

Has anyone got any photos of the above.
My father in law worked there for many years and would like to see some old photos

Many thanks

Tony b

I dont have any pictures of the Trucks, but I know JP Woods (Chuckie Chicken) were supplied with Scanias by Keltruck at West Bromwich, in the early 1980s. I had the dubious honour of delivering them to at Craven Arms and then having to hitchhike back to West Brom on several occasions. :imp: :imp:
I do however have a picture which appeared in the local newspaper of the fleet of buses that transported the workers into the factory from surrounding areas.

Picture taken from Shropshire Star
JP Woods closed in the early 1990s

Sorry its not alot of help.

PS If you contact Mike Kelly at Keltruck, he may be able to rustle up a photo or two. Nice guy is Mike, and no doubt will be happy to help if he can.

I don’t know whether this is from the right era, but this is the only picture I have of vehicles from the Chukie fleet:

Heres one i found on the wifes facebook.

When my fatherinlaw got made redundant from here 20 years ago he was on about £18k and £20 a night out.

Hi Tony,
Didn’t they have a place at Anglesey as well
Cheers Dave.

They had anglesey, strefford, and rhymny that i know of,I used to sneak a ride with my stepdad and even get in the yard and help him shunting on a sunday,I was only 15-16 at the time and driving those 111’s about and the merc2035 iwas in my element.
Even when chuckie had gone,i found employment there again working for britpart. And if the money was better i’d go back tomorrow.
