Christmas in the truck

Rentadent:
What’s so bad about working on Christmas Day if a driver chooses to? Not everybody is religious, not everybody has kids or even a family to spend it with, not everybody thinks it’s the most important day of the year and the world must come to a stand still.

Whilst I agree with you on principle, society still considers Christmas to be a special occasion. Why shouldn’t a driver use that to their advantage and expect a higher rate for working it?

I agree, I never actually mentioned the rate of pay though only that some drivers won’t be bothered about working Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or Boxing Day but are getting chastised and almost ridiculed on here for not telling their boss to stick the truck up his arse.
If somebody is happy to work the unpopular days that others don’t want then fair play to them, and if they can earn a chunk more money for doing it then even better.

Depends on the circumstances. If I was asked to work Christmas Day as a limper then I would demand a premium rate for it. If I went for a permanent four-on four-off job, and it was explained at interview that it was a salaried job and shifts would include Bank Holidays, then that is the point at which I had the choice to accept or decline and my choice would largely depend on the salary being offered for the rest of the year.

I wonder how many are at home now and have had enough of Xmas already and are looking forward to getting back to normality.

just done 1st leg of prince edward island /usa triangle in lethbridge alberta 3200mile so far bad weather all the way .tomorrow south to san diego calf then upto s,francisco then back to p.e.i. canada approx 8000miles so treated myself xmas day to hotel and back at her tomorrow.

according to your camera then if its taken you 13 month to do 3200 miles,at the rate of progress you should be home in time for new years eve 2019.
or drop a couple of west coast turnaround pills into you and you will be finished by friday…

No big deal working Christmas Day, I have just knocked off from a 12 hour shift … no extra pay either … and back in tomorrow at 12pm.

Time for a new job with someone who appreciates you.

If it were me conversation would be:

TM: “Need you to do a run tonight.”

Me: “And where will you be tomorrow on Xmas day?”

TM: “At home, its Xmas day.”

Me: “So will I so you can ram your run up your arse.”

…no offence meant,just chewing the fat…
years ago they were called west coast turnovers or turnarounds. what are they called nowadays for the truckies that cant stay awake?

A couple of years ago or so, there was a foreigner, a Romanian lad afai remember, parked in a lay by on the by pass about a mile or so from my home, on Christmas Eve.
He was still there Christmas Day when me and the Mrs were visiting the kids.
Anyway my Mrs made up a box for him, turkey sarnies, mince pies, Christmas cake, choclates and other bits and pieces.
I knocked on his cab door and at first he looked a bit wary of me, but I tried to explain in my best Romanian  and like Marcel Marceau  , that I was also a trucker, the guy was over the moon and could not thank me enough.
Really felt good about myself that day. :sunglasses:

we did similar to a flipflop weekended and abandoned in the road down from us.
made him some pieces and a plate of scran.
it was around september or thereabouts, but a bit of brightness for his weekend.
showed him where he was tiping as he hadnt a scooby.
ive had similar on rare occasions abroad over the years with me being on the receiving end of things.

yes dieseldog did notice couple weeks back got some developed at walmart and the guy pointed the dates were wrong im not very high tech but well spotted lol they usually just call it coast to coast now but not many firms doing it now cos oof new elog law im just on it cos i do live on the very east and loads normally to calf got took for a ride on this one told me load for sandiego forgot to mention accross otherside of canada 1st apologise 4 spelling of of

Unfortunately there are many over here, a couple of my friends from Canada were stuck in NYC a couple of Christmases ago. The good thing here is that some bigger truck stops take pity and provide free Christmas diner. As you can imagine some of these guys here are over a weeks drive from home :frowning:

lol pat got a free coffee yday 5/30am at pilot just east of regina because there fuel islands were froze for a while happy new year m8

at least with your trucks,if your weekended somewhere, you can keep fit by jogging around inside the cab,or inviting in a couple of handy trollops and doing your own party/disco night…
if you pick the right trollops, the jogging may end up as horizontal jogging…

My mates who work at Scunthorpe steelworks work Xmas and New year as part of their shift roster, they just shrug and say tough and get on with it.
