I’ve heard about fines over the water & you might as well just give them the wagon and call it a day. I get the impression ours are reasonably polite as well without an attitude unless you are arsey with them. Couldn’t be dealing with a stroppy euro super cop trying to pump you for your last euro.

I have been handcuffed twice after being stopped for speeding in the Fatherland, each time for my own safety they said, I have also been on the wrong end of a machine pistol pointed at me by a gorgeous but angry female gendarme on the white motorway in France because I would not let them put a dog in the cab - I did capitulate at this point and let them 
They are a little harsher than our feds overall but I have never been slapped with a big fine despite many years of running across the water, I was always polite and it does help to greet them in the native language of the country you are in, even if all you can say is Hello and good morning or whatever.
