Not seen one for years, used to see a nice Scania run by Poretta. Any out there still working over here?
Last time I saw a Chinese six someone had parked it on a roof by the seaside ![]()

Wow, thatās a blast from the past, not seen one in ages, but would be interesting to know.
There was an ERF runing hay and straw in the north shropshire cheshire are it was a blue one with a rack over the cab
Not a truck, but there has been a āChinese Sixā Bedford VAL coach (the same type as the one in The Italian Job) for sale for the last few weeks in one of the PSV trade magazines. Class 6 on it apparently so it could be put to work.
I think there was a green cabbed ERF with a red body on hay & straw?
If anyone didnāt understand the one on the roof bit, hereās a picture of a VAL replica on the roof at Bexhill

Most of the current Chinese Sixes are used in two scenarios-
Lorry-mounted cranes (Hiab) where the heavier front-mounted crane attachments mean that the second steer is needed to prevent the front axle being overloaded.
Hay & straw merchants. Same idea as the crane operators, except that the extra front-end weight is due to the practice of loading part of the load over the cab in order to obtain a decent payload.
The practice of using Chinese sixes for general haulage died out with the advent of palletised goods and curtain siders. The idea was that the extra axle was necessary to keep the front axle from becoming overloaded due to weight transfer when doing multi-drop deliveries. Pallets, fork lifts and more recently, curtainsiders meant that, should the forward axle be in danger of becoming over loaded, a couple of pallets could be moved further to the rear of the vehicle.

Itās hereā¦tried to copy imageā¦but FAILED ā ā ā ā my I.T. skills!!! See pg 36 for sale advert. We used to call them āfour in handā the Bedford VAL coach with Plaxton Elite body - something a bit different-a bit British!!
Tate & Lyle used to use Bedford TKās on multi-drop as I recollect. Some breweries also used them as they had 16 or 17 inch wheels which made them easier for handballing with a lower platform.

Hears a Scottish & Newcastle Bedford off the internet. Eddie.

This was operated by Tom Quirk Plant Hire of Martham nr.Gt. Yarmouth. Tom died suddenly a couple of years ago but the firm is still going. I like their slogan; āThink work think Quirkā.
As well known Iām a bit of a fan of the full fat twin steer 8 wheeler, but I quite like the quirky diet twin steer version. Any more pics out there?
