Chief driver????

Was also known as a “Road Foreman.” See Patrick McGoohan as “Red” in Hell Drivers.
There is a self appointed “Senior Driver” where I used to work, long serving and will always take managements’ views over fellow drivers. Will train new drivers and then criticise them when they do things their own (better) way.

Good film. Flat cap at the ready and tippers set to mayhem. As per nowadays then?!

Does your “chief driver” wear a flat cap, live in black and white and bully the new boys?

I thought that Hell Drivers was as a big o load o crap as Cliff Richards Summer Holidays :unamused:

Chief Driver?

Met loads of those.
know alls.
Been there donkeys years don’t know nothing else.
All ways cherry pick the best work for themselves and are so far up the gaffers arse all you can see is his boot laces hanging out.

I forgot Ducko.

Does he happen to Drive a V8 Scania? or a Tang?

If so, he might be the self-imposed Chief driver

We had a self appointed, “Foreman driver” on Chapman and Ball, used to drive the only Mack on the fleet, I think that was something to do with it, he thought the Mack was the best thing since sliced bread and he was the only one that could drive it.
Truth was, no one else wanted the heap of ■■■■!

We got one at where i work, he got his little crew who spy on the rest of us who do the real work

mk7fiesta:
it means he has a longer tongue than you …and most probably swallows…

:open_mouth:

You’ve all pretty much hit the nail on the head, he’s a self confessed brown nose who recently grassed a driver up to the boss for not having full uniform on, can’t even drive the lorries we drive, full of ■■■■ and patronising.
Every company has em I spose!

And others.

I would say senior driver sounds better,we had one where I worked 15 yrs ago [probably dead now ]but he took over at weekends in the tspt office overseeing everything and making sure everything went smoothly,we all had respect for this guy because of his long service, and he would sort any problems if they arose, but like us he was still a driver who had his own driving duties to complete, but as I said a decent bloke

Next in line to sit behind the mdf

Living the dream

Never in my life heard it referred to as chief driver.

lead driver - driver foreman are usually what they are referred to. Our “lead driver” is a walloper as I expect 99% of lead drivers out there to be

I forgot to add our “lead driver” got “lead driver” embroidered on his work polo shirts using his own money. Think that speaks volumes.

Tris:
Typical management strategy making themselves more important by adding layers of non jobs beneath them whilst throwing in a bit of divide and rule. And when there needs to be cut backs they’ve got the guy who’s surplus to demote.

I suggested a ‘driver mentor’ at a company I worked for, as they had/have a high though put of young drivers and a lot of it was due to this being a true ‘general haulage’ company with many different jobs all with their special techniques and problems. I thought that if drivers could ring a fellow driver with questions or problems they would be more likely to than just trying to battle on and get sick and leave.
it was dismissed as the company didn’t want to pay any more money to anyone although I do believe they are on about setting something similar up.
Personally I would like to think I do it myself to whatever degree a driver wants. Some don’t want any help, some are on the phone every hour, I am happy to help and don’t get anymore money but know without the help I got when I started I probably wouldn’t have continued.
I also argued that if the job was to be done properly drivers would be able to air their issues to the mentor who would then take them to management or possibly sort them himself if it was within his ability.
Maybe a Utopian dream I know but I’ve always been a bit of a leftie hippy type, with capitalist tendencies.

To be honest I think the term chief driver has been pinched from a different industry. We’ve had Chief Pilots in aviation since Pontius was a pilot. These guys aren’t polo shirt wearing talk themselves up roles. Vastly different! It’s a legal post holder position required for the company to hold an air operators certificate (recently replaced as Director of flight operations - Yourrrup for you!). They’re all powerful, slightly terrifying and very experienced characters carrying legal responsibility. You only meet the CP either on the annual ground refresher course, through e mail with communications of operational aspect or, you’ve ■■■■■■ up!
