Check your car breakdown cover

chunk:
Don’t bother with pay and claim cover, you could end up seriously out of pocket if you dont claim in time. I used to have AA cover £100 plus, then stared taxi-ing. AA wanted £189 :open_mouth: , RAC the same, then found a company called INSURANCE CHOICE, £89 full taxi cover, breakdown, recovery home from anywhere in UK or Europe.
I have picked up customers at cardiff airport whose vehicle has broken down in France and they have been put up in a hotel and had all travel arrangements sorted to get them and their motorhome back to UK. I have personally used them twice and found them to be top notch. They do gold cover for £69 ,every benefit going! By the way, I dont work for them but i’m really impressed at the value for money.

Bit of a stupid thing to say? Only the foolhardy would not claim for the recovery costs, as, er, that’s how the company works. :bulb: :unamused:

Incidentally, when I had my own tractor unit I had that covered with RAC commercial. Used them once for a blown clutch hydraulic pipe. Drove it from m/way exit to nearest industrial estate & parked up (reversed into a side road) with no clutch. The bonus of a proper old fashioned manual g/box!
They fixed it promptly after being persuaded not to tow it in. (loaded!) The fitter went to Heathrow Scania & got a pipe. I just paid for that & tipped the fitter, didn’t even lose any time as it was near end of shift when it went & I put it on rest as soon as i parked up.

I have pretty good breakdown cover with IC breakdown underwritten by Equity Red Star. It costs £49 a year. For that I get: at home, roadside and onward travel for me and 6 passengers, trailer and caravan cover, £160 overnight hotel cover if my car cant be repaired/recovered. Unlimited callouts and no extra cost for my car being over 7 years of age.

rob K, you only have a certain amount time to claim with some companies for them to reimburse you. If you have for example been involved in an accident and have payed to have your car recovered, it is possible to forget to put your claim in immediately, as you will have a million things on your mind. All I was trying to say is that I don’t feel that pay and claim is the best way to go when you can get full breakdown and recovery cover so cheaply.

I’d check the smal print on that. I have it with RBS Royalties, but it only covers me in a 35 mile radius of my home address. Hence why it is ‘free’.

I started to commute from Newport to Avonmouth on my bike which is getting on a bit so I gave them a call to check, fully expecting to have to pay a top up, turns out i’m fully covered result!!!

+travel insurance+sentinel credit card protection+mobile phone insurance. I’ll take it cheers

I have visited a thread last week. a thread was with name of “breakdown cover …is it a halaal ?”
“Halaal” is an urdu word means to finish up and to absorbing all the things from the customer till he became a beggar.
That thread was trying to focus on the behavior of the breakdown cover agents and the amount charged by them after assistance which is other than premium. Usually it has been seen that they assist and charging the assistant amount while the company has already taken a huge amount as a premium. so be aware of this nature of the insurance companies while buying a breakdown cover.

Whoosh… This one seems to have gone straight over the mods heads… :unamused:

http://www.icbreakdown.co.uk/compare.php you get more cover for your money the AA would charge £100 for a like for like, but you can get a £50 cash back from the likes of quidco or top cash back so end up only paying the same, one thing with both AA & RAC both are auto renewing if annual cover is paid, with the AA you can pay monthly £7 per month, that is on a rolling monthly basis not a 12mth contract, so handy if you only needed temporary cover

I have The platinum+ account, and have made claims for my iphone and hotel + Flight expenses because of the Earthquake, total was £2300. My AA cover is for all family members living at home, and is the AA’s top level of cover including Europe, for the same level on the AA web site (without Europe) costs £223.50, so even though I pay for the bank account it has been very good value for money.
Just as a point, when I contacted the bank with regard to the travel insurance claim they suggested the air line were responsible, but as they were not a British company the air line were not liable. I thought I would not get paid, and the travel insurance said I wouldn’t be entitled to claim from them, however when I got back from Central America there was a letter from the bank saying they had reviewed my case and decided to pay my claim even though I wasn’t really covered.

very good that so many members are well covered for mechanical breakdowns but in the OP the car driver had a flat tyre, why didn’t the lazy git change the wheel? nowadays too many people rely on someone else when they could easily do it themselves :imp:

Because most car drivers haven’t a clue how to set about doing it.

The last time I had a puncture on the road in a car, I was under way again <5 minutes.

Under 5 mins? I think you are exaggering somewhat…

Why would it take more Rob? If you know where the tools are, little stuff in the boot to hamper access to the spare or the spare carry tray winder is kept greased, and obviously you don’t bother putting trims back on, restowing the spare underneath, etc. TBH i think it was 4 mins dead. Don’t forget when I was running my own repair business I was taking wheels off & on almost daily. (though a windy gun in the workshop speeds things up a bit there).

Seeing as that is something you’ve never mentioned then I hope you’ll forgive me for “forgetting” about it. :unamused:

Don’t ask me about Cheltenham, the AA and Sierra Cambelts…useless ■■■■■■■ ■■■■■■■

different accounts offer different levels of cover, the gold account will only be the very basic level of cover.
