ALDI Swindon won’t let you into yard in a van, was a time I would be sent for returns for one of their suppliers. Was a ball ache having to wait around until someone would come out to another gate with what would probably be 8 or so items.

I was sent from Croydon to Hackney for 3 tiny boxes but because we had a contract with this company, any items for said company had to go on our vehicles and the smallest we had were 26 tonners. And it was Bank Holiday Friday too.

Mufitts had a contract for car parts from Denso in Bolton to Turin, that had to load every day at 2pm- I done it twice, first time I took two A4 envelopes and the 2nd time 2 pallets, and that’s in an 18 metre draw bar… I did ask the office both times if they wanted to top me up with groupage for Italy but the answer was the customer pays for the trunk and if it doesn’t go and arrive on time we get a penalty clause

edit: correction it wasn’t Bolton its was near Leeds … I blame it on getting old ! :unamused:

Two envelopes to Italy with a draw-bar !! I’m assuming you had a full load back but that’s incredible :open_mouth:

I take it you were in Turin the following lunchtime then

That operated quite a lot when on the ESSO contract many years ago…spares for ships, could often be a washer in an envelope…take it to so and so berth southampton…the ship sailed 3 hours ago…ok i`ll find where its going to and you take it there…money wasnt a problem…holding up that ship was…often ended up in spain, italy, or gibralta…and that envelope had to be handed over personally.

When I did the courier work for ICI Computers of Scarborough I got the job of delivering the written quotes to the hospital trusts that were being set up, just with maybe half a dozen envelopes running all over the country in my car and getting van mileage rate for it. Then I got the job of delivering the computer systems for the contracts they had won. Loved it !!
