Buy a cheap android/iphone phone and have free lifetime map updates, satellite view, street view and navigation.

I have got one mate, there just like a normal nav they try to send you down weight limits, no HGV Zones and width restrictions then you usually have to go 2-3 miles to find a safe place to turn it round which in central London costs you 30 mins

Streetview shows you all the restrictions, find your drop first and work back to the nearest main road, then look at the satellite view to see if their is any crossings over the roads you want to use then if you see one then go to street view and see if it has a restriction. Also check every junction on streetview for a 7.5ton 6’ 6" limit.

In theory this would be ok, only problem is with up to 10 drops in central London it would take far too much time to do, were nearly always already running behind due to having to wait in the morning to be loaded, quite often don’t make it back.

exactly what I was going to say, by the time you have done all your checking half the day has gone.

Use google maps & a normal a to z. Much more reliable!

:open_mouth: No! If I’m going somewhere new I look it up the night before until I’ve pretty much memorized the roads I’ll be going down! And if I need to get my bearings i either pull in a layby and look at the map or I carry on and hope for the best. If i’ve a good amount of petrol I look at it as an adventure

My license is a privilege not a right, I earned that privilege and I’m thankful everyday for what was given to me. And considering it’s a daily route from Knottingley to the yard in buroughbridge I don’t need a map or a sat nav  HTH!

well if you look at the title of the thread you will notice it say TRUCK sat nav not car :imp: and if you want to use google maps for your car all well and good but finding weight limits and low bridges on google maps is hard work.

so going back to your original post, well its not really relevant is it.

Central London is going be the hardest work without a well updated truck-dedicated nav. Having said that, it may sound like the bleedin obvious but when I look on google maps I look for any train lines and then go into streetview where they intersect with my route to get the heights or use truckers atlas if applicable. Obviously this is naff all use for nimby weight limits.

Anyone ever contacted google maps and requested height and weight restriction updates?

what I do in London is use my truck atlas with the blown up map of London in the back then like you say check the bridge heights on my route.

I rarely use my sat nav in London.

using a sat nav of any kind in london is just asking for trouble no matter what you spend on one .

get good london map much easyer

so going back to your original post, well its not really relevant is it.

So how did people go on before sat navs? People used maps and common sense instead nowwa days people rely solely on sat navs to get them from A to B and it often gets people in situations they shouldn’t have been in had they planned their route accordingly. Only because I don’t drive a truck either doesn’t mean I’m not capable of giving my input on a subject like this. And how is my point not relevant? If you’re going somewhere you’ve never been before why the hell would you just go off a sat nav and not look at a map before hand? That’s just asking for trouble before you’ve even set off. You can pick up hgv driver oriented maps with bridge heights and weight limits on for £10 and google maps helps somewhat so you can check on the map if the route selected is the right or if you’d need to detour because of a low bridge or a weight restriction.

So again tell me how my point isn’t relevant other than the fact I don’t drive trucks for a living just yet. Or is that the only reason :unamused:
