I don’t know enough about chassis repair - well nothing at all really - so really can’t comment, except nice colour.

Nice work. It’s a compelling watch if you get hooked at the start.

I got hooked. There’s some clever people out there.
The heating, cutting and welding of the rails, clearly shows the ignorance of the tensile properties of the parent material.

Those weren’t clever people. You don’t put heat or weld onto HGV chassis rails. There’s reasons that they come with all those holes pre-drilled for mounting points.

The best way to repair a cracked ERF unit chassis is to get the chassis glowing each side the crack then weld it with the stick welder ,just wondering how many chassis you have repaired Conor
I still think they were pretty clever to be able to completely strip that thing down and rebuild it in a dirt yard in a country where it looks like anything goes.

None, we used to replace them when they got bent or cracked which they did quite often compared to those used in civilian transport. But then again we weren’t trying to cut corners and save money to put in the bosses pockets.
Is the steel used in the chassis of a 21st century Mercedes the same as the steel used in a 20th century ERF?
.
The repair shown wouldn`t be up to original spec, but it is a good use of available resources, and shows real graft and craft.

Plus they didn’t think it worth showing the bloke stowing his sledgehammer and connecting his laptop to re-boot it - I guess they take that for granted
IIRC ERF and Foden chassis were advertised as being made of high tensile steel in the mid 1980s. I was working for a Foden dealer at that time and again IIRC we were told not to weld to the chassis. Going back further in time AEC chassis would crack just behind the front spring rear hanger bracket.
Theres a YouTube channel called Pakistani Trucks.
It’s crazy with very little regards to H&S, but they do an awesome job with what tools they have.
Some of my best memories were sat on the roof of a Bedford truck/converted bus, with all sorts of artwork, chains as mudguards touching the tarmac and about 20 different musical horns blaring off. And oh, no ■■■■■ given about speed limits.
Madness out there.

There used to be a label, often painted over, on Foden chassis (pre Paccar) warning that they shouldn’t be welded. The X members cracked reguarly though with the chassis twisting on sites and we left them until MOT time and then welded the cracks, they soon cracked again though.
