Something bugging me lately is quiet motorways, approaching a slower vehicle, a vehicle on your offside and 1-2 clear lanes on their offside. You start indicating and they refuse to indicate and move over, instead either slamming the anchors on or flooring it to get past you.
I remember watching a program about bad habits and Ann Widdecombe did this saying she was always told it was safer to stay in one lane and not change.
Is it a generational thing or just pure ignorance to their surroundings?
its lack of fore thought

If it’s a generation thing it seems to be all generations.
I’ve seen people young and old do this, so lets blame the middle aged
I don’t think it’s necessarily anything other than that they are fast asleep.

Know what you mean, I had a 4x4 doing the same a few weeks ago, very reluctant to move into lane 3, so I start wandering into lane 2 and he gave in and moved across, it was only after he went passed me that I realised why he didn’t want to go into lane 3, he was towing a little trailer, lol.
Either pure laziness, lack of forward planning or they don’t want to take their eyes off you & check lane 3 is clear in case they manage to ram you or they are just afraid of driving in lane 3, because of the last option I try & give people the benefit of the doubt unless I’m sure they’re being a ■■■■ in which case I pull out anyway.

I am surprised the 4x4 towing a trailer did not just ease off because that must be a regular occurrence

I’m middle aged, so blame me.
But then again I to tend to stay in the Nearside lane except when I’m overtaking.
So STOP Blaming me !
I’m confused #%*.
I’ve received my IAM magazine, and the fella in there ex traffic plod says it’s safer to remain in lane and avoid changing lanes! then goes on about lorry drivers needing a NEW QUALIFICATION!
aka the DCPC!

I think you must have come across me on the roads because if I am on the motorway and a truck comes up on the inside he needs to have enough speed to get past me or he backs off, the final white line onto a motorway simply means Give Way.
I have been left high and dry too many times to move over into the centre lane to be left there for a mile. This can also be defended by who is the heaviest, is the truck preventing you coming out heavily loaded or empty?

This is not about joining motorways at junctions. This is about approaching slower moving vehicles while a vehicle is on your O/S

And I am surprised that Weeto didn’t just ease off and let the 4x4 go past before pulling out to overtake. I know it’s sometimes annoying to have to do this, but ultimately it’s not really on to force someone to slow down or change lanes just because you need to get into the middle lane.
It always strikes me as funny when people say “oh, he should have seen I was catchiing the truck in front and planned ahead to give me space to pull out”. Er, no … you should be the one doing the planning ahead.
Old education/re-education
When motorways were first concieved the principle was Slow Lane, Fast Lane and Overtaking Lane.
To be honest I have no idea when it changed as in 1985 I was informed it was the same.
Personally if i’m going a littlefaster than the car in the middle I stay where i am and creap up the inside, if i’m considerably faster I move over and around them so as they don’t get surprised at my speed of approach and panic move accross.
The ones that bug me are the outside lane brigade that don’t move accross one when they have finished over taking. because for me to move accross and delibrately undertake is an offence.
I buzz them on the inside at 130 mph, that soon wakes them up and they usually move back into lane 1 at that point.

Quite correct as its the nearside driver who should be adjusting their speed to enable a safe overtake.
IMO its bad manners to start indicating “if” a vehicle is already alongside you, should it be approaching/catching you up then for sure indicate if you need to as long as the approaching vehicle has room to move over if safe to do so.
Keep left! Unless overtaking! I have heard middle aged folk say “The speed limit is 70mph,so the middle lane must be 60 and the inside lane is 50” explains a lot of stupid lane discipline here I think!
Hi,
It never crosses their mind that you may wish to overtake.
They have no idea of traffic conditions in lane three.
They are basically frightened of lane three.
