a high risk strategy, but, what about telling them / dropping hints, that you’re reluctantly getting to the point of looking for a driving job

Had an offer a few weeks back and let it go because I was told “when a wagon becomes available…” One is free from tomorrow but they’ve gone back on what they said and taken on a new driver. The spare plant man who wanted my job aint happy either, so 2 upset employees in favour of one happy recruit. Weird way of thinking.

Piston Broke, I take on what you say, but I’m peed off that I stayed where I was when I could’ve got a job elsewhere last month; I’d heard the vacancymight be coming up so took advice and stayed put. Now I’m still stuck in the quarry despite there being a spare truck. There’s another driver who wanted to swap jobs-he’s had second thoughts because of the hassle I’ve had.
If I look on the bright sideI only do Mon-Fri, I cycle to work and I’m home by 5pm.
Sounds a right ■■■■■ of a job!! No wonder you wanna leave,

So, your willing to throw away a job where the gaffer actually does rate you, and the hours/shifts being conveniant to possibly become a number on a ■■■■ shift system and at time be treated worse than a Jew in a ■■■■ camp,
Just think about it proper eh.
Muckaway:
The main reason I’m wanted on the shovel is because there used to be loads of complaints about bad loading and crap haul roads.
And by keeping you on the shovel your boss knows what a good job you do. He’s hardly likely to want to give that job to someone who will create loads of complaints again.
Muckaway:
I stopped this and I bloody wish I hadn’t!
Why?

Don’t let go of this job! I will never take this sort of shift for granted after doing a crappy any 5 from 7. Stick with it enjoy your life outside of work and you may get what you want in the end. Took me 3 months but got a 4 on 3 off shift, no weekends ever!
This is what frustrates me with quarry work; The other two shovel drivers started their breaks ten minutes early today, driving past at least 4 lorries waiting to load while I’m loading another. Their break’s not meant to start until 1:30, manager takes no notice. So called colleagues all standing in weighbridge larking about while I’m sweating my balls off, getting complaints 'cos someone’s not been loaded in turn, bagging plant calling for material etc. So called half hour lunch break for the others is always at least 45 minutes, or as today until I’ve cleared the backlog. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll cut my break short if there’s a sudden rush (I can get the break back during a quiet spell) but if I’m paid the same as they are I expect them to do some of the work.
If anyone thinks this is an exageration, just ask Altitude on here; He’s seen the “faces in the weighbridge window” phenomenon, or the crowd of “workers” chatting behind stockpiles.

Dont flatter yourself, workplaces all over the country have their workers and shirkers, as Colgate Rantzen once said, “Thats Life”.
As the last poster said you always get some that do and some that don’t in all walks of life Nathan, our quarry was just the same. A few very conciensus plant men and a few who thought that the world owed them a living so were not bothered if they did the job or not. I bet that if you do decide to leave wherever you finish up it will be just the same, that is one of the downsides of staying with one company for a long time as you get in a rut and imagine that other firms are better run, believe me they are not!
Pete.
Reading between the lines, I’d say they’ve got a good reason for not putting you back on the wagons.
You’re running the loading side of the quarry very efficiently.
Stop complaining, start making positive suggestions (if we did ‘x’ it would save us ‘y’) and look forward to a promotion (although I appreciate that may not be what you want to do, I’m sure the cash would come in handy). You can then get all the lazy sods to pull their weight or leave.
Seriously, in the current climate you’ve got long service so won’t be made redundant at the drop of a hat and you are close to work so spend very little time and money commuting. There’s thousands who would envy you in both those things. I’d hang in there…any move is likely to be worse not better.
Quit whining or learn to duck!

Ah but I can read the small print in my contract…which I have kindly pointed out.
Having just read all the quote’s on this thread, I think I’d be inclined to stay put…
Sounds like you’ve got a real tidy job, dont worry about the other guys not doing the job properly, the office will know exactly whats going on but probably cant really do alot about it, keep your head down and crack on with the job and you see the rewards in time. You’ve still got many years ahead of you to get back behind the wheel, enjoy having a break and all the hassle that comes with driving.
Its not often you get drivers saying what a good company so and so is to work for, hopefully for your own sake this is just a cry for attention thread.
where will you stand with the dcpc if youre on the shovel nathan? will they still pay to put you through it?

One of the things I’m concerned about, Andrew; They say they’ll continue with the training but can I believe it? At least I’ve got it in writing the job was on a 3 month trial; Apparently it was a mistake and shouldn’tve been in the contract, but tough, I and the signed it.
If i was you i would leave for another job, after 14 years of whinging, moaning, whining about others not to mention the cycling to work and being back home by 5 pm 5 days a week you must be worn out!
It sounds to me like heavy industry or quarrying is not realy your barrow and you only stay in the job due to the fact it’s not hard work, also for the short working hrs and as your dad works at the same firm!
I would try contacting your local council for a job because if they are owt like the council in our area you will fit right in
you never know your luck as oxfordshire county council might have a shortage of lgv/machine drivers that have lost touch with the real world.
