Subject: Obtaining a DQC with Acquired Rights JAUPT:0947
Laurie,
Since the acquired rights deadline has passed DVSA has received requests from members of the public, who wish to return to vocational driving, asking how they can obtain a DQC. DVSA has considered these requests in the context of the government’s desire to support driver recruitment and reduce the potential burden to the industry and has decided that they will now allow drivers with a full licence to gain their first DQC via either periodic training or completion of modules two and four. For further information on modules two and four please visit: gov.uk
This provision will apply to a driver’s first DQC only - any subsequent renewal will require periodic training to be completed. DVSA envisages this will have very limited impact on approved trainers and anticipate as more drivers enter the industry the demand for Driver CPC periodic training will ultimately be increased.
So if, in a moment of weakness, I did decide to start using my licence again I wouldn’t have to do the full 35 hours? Nice. What does module 2 and 4 entail?
This particular change has been in place for a couple of months now. However the DVSA systems aren’t yet able to accept a booking for Module 2 via the online system for a driver who has acquired rights - so phone calls have to be made and it is currently taking upwards of 30 days to get a booking for Module 2 and then another 2 to 4 weeks for Module 4.
So far everyone I have spoken to has taken the 35 hours in a classroom route rather than the Mod 2 and Mod 4 and we still have virtually full courses Monday to Friday twice a month with acquired rights drivers getting their first DQC.
I think it may be the idea that Mod 2 and 4 can be failed whereas periodic training can’t.
Driver-Once-More:
After my time Niel, but I always took that to mean Theory and practicle
MOD 2 = LGV or PCV theory test.
MOD 4 = Practical demonstration.
Mod 2 is computer based and from what I’ve read consists of 50 multiple choice questions such as
Q. You need a 45 minute break after how much driving time.
A1. 2 hours.
A2. 3 days.
A3. 4½ hours.
A4. 1 year.
Q. At a junction a car pulls out in front of you, should you:
A1. Blow your horn and flash your lights.
A2. Slow down to leave a safe stopping distance between you and the car.
A3. Ignore the oncoming traffic and overtake the car blowing your horn.
By the way I’m not joking about this, as far as I can make out some of the multiple choice answers really are that stupid
Mod 4 is the practical demonstration where you have to show the examiner that you know where things on the vehicle are such as the O-licence or trailer brake and what the weights on the plate mean ec’t.

It’s pretty much like that, except the question starts with a little story (they’re always about lorry drivers) and then the questions are about the events of the story. I didn’t do any specific revision for my one, I just revised for the normal theory test and I did ok.

Many experienced drivers will not need training for this and the info in that video will be enough so that means that they could get hold of a LGV C1 vehicle that is ok for the DVSA specifications and do the whole thing themselves
Module 2 theory is a test with a few different picture scenarios and there are a few Qs on each pic with multiple choice answers - again experienced drivers should have no issues doing this without any prior training
These two are tests which can be failed whereas the periodic is 35 hours of attendance so its up to the individual how they proceed
I have been informed the current first time pass rate for Mod 2 is below 50%. I have no evidence of this though but my source is usually correct. If this is the case then either people taking the test are extremely nervous or the test is harder than suggested here.
Here is an actual case study and seven questions about it.
