It is down to the captain or loading officer, if he wants 12 chains, then 12 chains is what he gets. I have had several discussions about it especially with lift tanks. The corner castings are suitable lashing points but some of the crew wont use them. Some want the landing legs dropped and tow pin fitting, some don’t bother

was on the stena line adventurer there not so long ago and my gray and adams fridge has 10 lashing points and they where all used but whats the point as i was in the middle row and all they done was secure it to the pot riveted floor sure if they sea is rough your just ripping the floor clean up

Was on a ferry couple yrs back ( was in Dec) & they wouldnt allow several lorry on due to lack of lashing points but the sea was a bit choppy so could be something to do with that

But it is upto the captain / loading officer at the end poss another reason if any damage then they are not to blame so you cant make a claim

Only time I have ever been chained down on the Adventurer is when carrying DG and then it is only usually 2, or occasionally, 4 chains. Most crossing it’s just drive on and park with no chains used.

It is actually a legal requirement to have a certain number of lashing points if a truck is to be shipped. It was in Commercial Motor last year, they did a spot check in Holyhead and something like 90% of trucks didn’t have enough. We had a trailer go over on the NorfolkLine Dublin boat last year because it wasn’t chained enough. After that all our trailers were dragged into the workshop to have lashing points welded on. That trailer was in a row of trailers so that doesn’t make a difference, it was just leaning on the trailer next to it, until they pulled it out and over it went.
