One of the things that annoy me about ham radio is how some people will use the Q codes that just about them and a few other people know.
When i go and help the radio club with contests is when it can get boring. I think i sat there for about 90mins, trying to get as many contacts as i could, just calling “CQ Contest CQ contest CQ contest, golf 5 radio radio, germany 5 rolls royce CQ contest” wait for a few seconds then start again. I always had someone that got you very strong, but you could hardly hear them.
The people that do long ‘overs’ can be annoying, especially people who keep going, “I’ll take a pip” then carry on.
Overall though its excellent, once you get to know the people, and people get to know your call sign there will be people you can sit there and talk to for hours.
Rob, Trubrit,
The Q codes come from Morse, a bit like texting only trying to reduce the number of key strokes as opposed to letters. Also there can be little mistake in what is being sent
For example CQ …seek you
DX usually means long distance or rareity value for the band
QRT quiet as in pulling the big switch
QSY shift frequency QSY? Shall we shift frequency to ?
HI HI is a corruption of hee hee as in … . . (hee) … … (hi)
BCNU Be seeing you

Well I never knew that. Quite obvious really now you see it written down!
Another little snippet of info to add to the ol’ memory bank!
hiabman:
I’'ve recently been given a new(ish) wagon that came complete with a CB. I managed to get an aerial hooked up a few days ago.Being used to day cabs (DAFs and volvos) this particular truck (Scania sleeper) has reignited my interest in our line of work.
Is CB’ing a dying method of communication these days 'cos these past 3 days hardly anybody seems to be using it (channel 19 specifically)?
Being a CB newbie my knowledge of CB lingo is bobbins. Can you lot inform me RE cb slang?
Cheers
Paul
Hi Paul.
you say you got an antena hooked up have you had the SWR checked out ? your radio will only be as good as your antena, the reason your not hearing anybody is maybe your coax has a breack in it get it tested also have the PL259’s checked out maybe the radio is not putting out any power the power will reduce for these reasons, maybe the antena is not grounded properly if you have a fault like this you will blow the radio if you keep transmitting, if you have a wet piece of string as an antena you wont get anywhere.
get it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing.
seeing as you posted this in January you may well have blown it by now
we have CBs theres about 50 of us coming and going from our quarry on channel 30 its good for directions to sites and info when looking fo someone also can tell the driver in front if there is something intresting comeing past in a car or waking down the street you no what i meen
