havent a clue about cb’s but would be useful if there was a channel only truckers bothered with but thats the problem i guess anyone can just be on air and ruin it
Yep, Always had my trusty old CB. all started in the AM days… Got the Uniace 200 fm at the moment and thunder poll. AM days ware the best, hiding the am rig from the wheel tappers and the boys in blue … Arrrrr them ware the days … ;-]]
We use them here - all the trucks I’ve driven have had one fitted. They aren’t used much for general chit-chat but are used for warning other drivers; elks near the road, that sort of thing. Also the abnormal load escorts use them to warn oncoming traffic.
you can have a lot of fun with cb if you get the right bunch to yak too, it certainly makes the miles go past quicker
I would get one but doubt if the company would allow it…probably class it as personalising the truck which is verboten.
Would i be right to suggest that a lorry driver can use a CB radio when driving because its no differant to a policeman answering his radio when driving?

Im not positive but i think my old man has got one mate
I’ve had a CB since way before they became legal & I would find our work today more difficult without it.
I used one for years when I was on night trunk & I made a lot of good friends because of the CB.
Our job is easier when we use it properly, we often deliver into places where there’s only access for one or two lorries at a time & the CB is a handy tool for getting in & out of jobs, if there’s an idiot amongst us then it makes life hard work, then again, an idiot can often ruin the job for everyone can’t they.
Charlie 3 used to give directions to drivers in Swindon, they were a fabulous bunch of people & provided all sorts of services over the years & all because of the CB. I became very friendly with Bob & Ray from Charlie 3. Sadly Bob lost his life & after a while the service broke up we all lost touch. The CB was the link & it’s given a lot of people connection with the outside world.

I think CB is like Marmite you either love em or hate em,
Me I dont like them, but I love Marmite. Can anyway tell me how the law stands on holding a CB mike in your hand, When If you hold a mobile phone and have it on speaker your breaking the law.
10-4 COMEONBACK.
Perfectly legal.
I used to have a link to the section that was on the internet about it but cant find it now.
The wireless telegraphy act or something or other.
Im sure someone will come along with the link…
Wrong,my mate got fined £60 and got 3 points for using a CB whilst mobile, only legal way is using a hands free system.

Hmmm, think it depends on the copper.

The “Mobile Phone law” doesnt apply to 2 way radios so your mate shouldnt have been done under that reg. HOWEVER that good old catch-all “Driving without due care and attention” can be applied.
When the mobile phone law was being drafted the “Reading and Surrey Gas Board” got that clarified.
The Mobile Phone Law only applies to mobile phones. I feel for your mate if he got done under the wrong law.
When I’m mobile the mike is usually resting on my knee and if I have a bit of steering to do, I throw the mike down.
Quite a few Hams have a setup where they switch the PTT over with a switch mounted onto the gear lever and either a boom mike off the sunvisor or one around the neck.
had one for years , but i rarely have it on , sometimes use it if me & another driver from work are heading the same direction at the same time & i know a few other firms who use different channels so sometimes chat with them, other than that it’s just the odd traffic update when on motorways if you can get anyone to answer so it spends most of it’s time turned off. really think it needs a meter put on it as reception isn’t as good as it was !
that & the fact i have no time to use it , my cab phone always has another couple of drivers ringing me moaning about the job !
