Hi all anybody got any photos history of caulkins [think that how its spelt] loggerheads nr market drayton uses to have foden fleet tippers and couple of tanks can remember then in arc quarry 75/76 can remember the son had f88 cheers ian
Hi boys
Ian, I remember Frank Caulkin and his son Clive. Frank ran four Fodens out of Irish Sea Ferries Garston in the early 70’s. He then sold the trucks to the drivers, supplying the work and fuel, taking a percentage. One driver was called Seth from Blythe Bridge, one called Larry, one called Phil with a twinsteer stroker, and another called Chris Brown (Hovis) who went on to work for Rag Arse (Hodnet Transport, now gone).I remember him having two new Fodens with the big headlights sorry cannot remember the model no( someone will know) and Frank rubbishing our Scania 110 saying his Fodens would be still going long after our Scania had died
In 1974 all the hauliers pulling out of Irish Sea Ferries decided to strike for better rates and my father rang Frank and asked him to join us but he declined saying if we all stopped he was big enough to put in extra trucks to do our work, and because he was bigger than us could afford to work for lower rates.
I don’t know if Clive is still going, as I think Malcolm Harrison has the old quarry they worked out off.Sorry no photos has anyone else ?
Regards Keith.
Hiya… d/d…A pal of mine drove a Foden and a F88 for Caulkins. You may know him. after leaving Caulkins he started driving for
Hayes of Darleston. he was up and down the A41 daily and parked his truck near the water tower in Drayton. His house was
nr the Angels down the lane.his name is Ed Bloor and his brother Fred drove many years ago for Febreys IICR Chipping Sodbury

Hi boys
John, thank goodness you replied I know exactly where you mean, not shore about the water tower though. It’s a while since I was down that road I will go and have a look next time I’m in the car, Don’t think the natives would like me going down there in the lowloader. We have had some plant at the new brewery just out of the centre on the Newport road before you drop down the bank towards the swimming baths. Now thats not the best place to go to in a big truck especally at rush hour. And now the bank has callaped on the bank and there is traffic lights there. What a night mare

Hiya keith…when i was a lad i did one or two loads of sugar beet in bags to a millars down that bendy bit. scratch scratch i think the firm was Simson
or simcock they had LAD Albions with blowers the paint job was dark fawn colour with Red mudguards and chassis.one waggon was smashed to hell the cab
was in a right mess and this chap unloading me said i was in that. anyhow as time passed by (6/8 months) i’am on the M6(1977) about 3 miles before Hilton park Queueing for the M5 one morning and this Albion is sitting in a farm yard still smashed up and the farmer must of used the body for storage it was still been used about 10 years ago. I’am not on the road anymore so i don’t know if its gone now.
Look out for the DAF on Friday I’am going to Weston park i’ll be down that A41
