Caught reading delivery address

Dr Damon:

GORDON 50:
The fact that drivers are worrying about looking at a piece of paper to check unit number/ name on delivery sheet just goes to show how things have descended to new depths in this country.

REALLY you obviously have no idea what disasters can happen and have happened by taking your eyes off the road for even that short period.

This is partly why all vehicles will become autonomous because drivers cannot act responsibly.

How long does it take to stop and look? Thought so, in too much of a hurry. :unamused:

I’m talking about glancing at a bit of paper while doing about 5 - 10 mph to double check the number…not reading a newspaper at 30mph! As Gasgas says it’s no more dangerous than looking at your speedo or even checking mirrors.

How is glancing at a delivery note different from glancing at the instrument panel to check vehicle speed or performing the ‘mirror’ part of ‘mirror, signal, manoeuvre’ or looking at a sat nav screen?

A glance may be acceptable but normally it takes more than a glance to look at a delivery note. It is a distraction that could lead to prosecution and prosecutions have happened for very similar offences if you care to check.

Sometimes, it’s more dangerous to stop. Sometimes, it’s illegal to stop.

Only if you stop in a dangerous place. Again it all boils down to being in a hurry. You may have to go round the corner for a safe place to stop.

GasGas:
So where is the specific offence for reading a delivery note on the statute book?

The offence will be ‘Not in proper control of a motor vehicle’ and it is highly likely they will be successful if they bring that charge against you. You would need deep pockets to fight it. I agree it would be a bit trumped up, but that is the way it seems to be.

To the OP - cameras are very poor at seeing inside vehicles, so I would guess it is pretty unlikely what ever image they may have would show beyond reasonable doubt what you were doing. So chances are you will be OK. But since you have now admitted it on social media don’t say different if you are charged, don’t under estimate them not seeing your post.

Good luck

I’d say that unless you clipped the kerb, crossed the whiteline or hit someone it would be easy to defend.

You will fail you driving test if you don’t take your eyes of the road to check your mirrors and speed in such a deliberate and exaggerated manner that it’s obvious to the examiner (when I took my test, the instructor used to tell us to deliberately slightly misadjust the mirrors so your head turned to look into them or the examiner might fail you). Now you also have to use a sat nav.

So I fail to see how you could be convicted for glancing at a piece of paper, unless you were sufficiently distracted to have made a mistake in your driving.

You believe what you want fella but I can tell you if you picked up a bit of paper and glanced at it on you driving test you would fail.
Completely different from checking your mirrors. :unamused:

Can you put your hand on your heart and swear that you’ve NEVER quickly looked at a delivery note/ map while driving?..no…thought not.

Not convicted by a court, though. And I can’t for the life of me think why the policeman on his bike wanted an excuse to talk to her in her convertible car on a sweltering hot day

In what way?

Hanging would be too good for you

somtam:
Good morning.
I was reading my notes as I entered an industrial estate and noticed as speed camera van.
Can anyone please tell me the outcome might be regarding points etc?
Is the camera automatic in which case as I was doing below 30 it.might be ok or manually operated if so I may not?
Thank you so much.
Thank you

Do you eat somtam?..I find it very refreshing

[emoji12] of course! Can’t imagine that.

But more seriously, maybe the copper wasn’t worried about having a sip at the lights, but about driving off when lights change with a nearly full cup and her concentrating on not spilling it, rather than driving?

If you are talking to me then can I ask where I said I did not to that? I never said I have not but what I did say was you could be prosecuted for that offence under certain circumstances.

In what way?

Because checking your mirrors in an important part of driving. Glancing at a piece of paper is not a part of driving and classed as a distraction from driving and can cause accidents occasionally.

Two nice slush puppies in view that could cause a massive distraction there to other drivers …

AndrewG:
Nothing will happen as you were under 30. It was a speed camera van and was purely for that purpose. Nothing to worry about unless it was a delivery note detector van…

Then stop going on about causing disasters etc by looking at a delivery note! Yes, reading while driving can cause some pretty nasty accidents but we’re talking about a quick glance at about 5 - 10 mph to double check something, highly unlikely to cause any problems unless your looking at it for way too long.

There you go again! Where did I say it would cause a disaster? Saying that, people have died in similar circumstances.I don’t make the rules fella but I am bright enough to realise a quick glance can develop into something that can cause serious issues.

Here,
‘REALLY you obviously have no idea what disasters can happen and have happened by taking your eyes off the road for even that short period.’
On your first post in this thread.

Apologies for that.
