I know some of these old hauliers go a bit outside Somerset & a few may be outside the time frame asked for, but here’s a few I remember, perhaps they deserve a mention & I’d love to see photos of them posted.
Walter Bye & Son Berkeley. Charlie Brimble Farrington Gurney, Wilf Harris also Farrington Gurney. Cobdens of Martock. David Watts Shepton Mallett. Frys from Blagdon. Reg cambridge Kingswood. A.F.Cook Frampton Cotterell. Ivor Jones & son Almondsbury. Troughtons Transport Falfield. Rex Terret Berkeley. Northovers Pilning. Austin Pearce Oldbury. Graham Harraway Yatton. Tony Crew Pucklechurch, Raymond Webb Brinkworth. J.T.Carpenter Crudwell. Jeff Farrow Somerset. A.J.Stokes Chippenham. N.B.Tite Cerne Abbas. Les Baber. Peter Candy Bath. The wonderful character Humphrey Shackell Hamswell near Bath, what a lovely man.
So many lovely names from the past, sadly not many still running. Wouldn’t it be lovely if this thread brought out photos of all of them.

It would be lovely if you have some to post Neil, this thread has had my head rattling tonight with some of the old firms from my childhood days. I was talking about a few of them with an old Ex cattle haulier in a tyre company this afternoon, I couldn’t belive finding this thread tonight.

not quite somerset ,but when i was about 12-13 , used to grab a ride with Henry durnells drivers in his Thames Trader wagon from Marshfield ,to the local markets in Chippenham and Bath, and in the holidays to Walls factory in Atlas road ,Acton, with pigs collected from local farms in the day, and taken to London at night, all before the M4 was built, but much more interesting .especialy one night when we fell over on a roundabout on Western Avenue! pigs everywhere, but not one hurt!. Happy days…chris
