Had a drop yesterday which was literally in a yard off the southbound side of the caterham bypass. Had a 15’10 trailer, no height marked on my atlas. To get to the drop I had to come off M25 drive up the bypass to the first roundabout and back down the bypass to the drop. Drove up and saw sign saying 15’9 limit. I thought sod it I have to go this way, it’s not on my map, and for the sake of 1 inch if I get to a bridge I’ll drop the suspension for an inch. Anyway no issue, got to the roundabout spun round to go south and again 15’9 limit. Went down, no issue and nothing that was height restricted. So why’s it there and whys it not on my map as it’s clearly not a new sign!
I don’t know that one, but if you turn off the A1 at Gateshead up the A184 into central Newcastle, there are signs saying the outside lane is restricted to 10’ 6", and largw vehicles had to use the inside lane & go round the smallish roundabout to access the high level bridge. However, the other week I was up there in my car & so used the 2nd lane where the road splits. There is NO height barrier, bridge or anything overhead whatsoever, never mind a 10’ 6" one, and the road goes straight around onto the high level bridge! So why does it have the restriction?
Going by the council’s map it seems to be this one.Lower restriction Southbound than Northbound.
I think it’s when you’re heading southbound there’s a pedestrian bridge crossing the road. It’s an arched bridge so when you’re in lane one the height limit is lower, but not as low as the signs say.
Those are the only signs warning of the bridge , I don’t recall anything nearer to the actual bridge.
This is the only bridge on that stretch of road that shows on the overhead map. I think there might have been a footbridge over, but has that now been taken down? (No, not “like the one at the bottom of Wrotham Hill on the M20”…)
Since it is not signed at all, it must now be over 16’6" We take it. At least over 16’6" NOW.
Perhaps the road underneath it was gouged out a foot during the most recent occasion it was re-surfaced?
Think about it. Such an engineering move would solve a LOT of problems for local HGV overheight traffic huh?
That has always been a weird one, each end of the bypass has a restriction sign showing 16’ 3" Northbound and 15’ 9" Southbound but no sign on the bridge. There is some minor damage on the bridge going Northbound so it has been hit by something, I used to use that road almost every day and have never seen anything stuck under the bridge.

its basically just for high winds protection I think
