Just got my licence back after just passing my Cat C.
My photo expires in 2018, which mashes sense because I updated it in 2013.
My category D D1 C and C1 have an expiry date of 2024 , what’s this all about ? What happens when I get to 2024 ?
(They don’t make this easy do they !!)
You have to go for a medical.

You get new photo in 2018 - that will last for 10 years even if it states less on the licence
You get new D4 medical (or if under 45 send in self medical) in 2024 - that will last for 5 years unless under special medical conditions
I am surprised that your Medical date is not 5 years from when you passed last D4 medical and subject to the self medical assessment if under age 45 …
So this medical thing is the norm then, every ten years…just clicked, it runs out the day before my 45th birthday …blimey, I was only 18 a minute ago !!
So new d4 and a paid medical every 10 years then ?

It starts from your 45th birthday I belive,I’m only 32 though so im not thinking that far ahead 
D4 medical is valid until age 45 in most cases so having D4 at age 18 will last until age 45
A D4 will last at least 5 years unless a restricted one is called for and that could be yearly!
A D4 taken at age 42 would mean the next one is due at age 47
I was fairly sure that 5 yearly self medicals were in force for those under age 45 but perhaps I have my info mixed up or it was proposed only 
From age 45 a D4 will be needed every 5 years - from age 65 its needed every year
