Category C - Training Diary

Sam Millar:
It would be a good idea to simply not allow the truck to engage low range above a certain speed

I always wondered why that was not incorporated but perhaps there is a technical reason

animal:
But if in doubt always check before you start like you would do with daily checks or when you start your car

Sam Millar:
It would be a good idea to simply not allow the truck to engage low range above a certain speed or a loud buzzer to let you know the paddle is down, but the buzzer is only activated above a certain speed (ie so it wouldn’t sound going 6-4 or something like that)

But out in the real working world how you gonna know

I didn’t just mean on training vehicles - I meant something that comes standard on most if not all lorries, a bit like the hold you get when you release the handbrake.

As some on here know I had my test for CE in Dec few years back when got to test centre was all ready for reverse but had that knock on the door to say it was canceled then tried several times more sometimes didnt evern get out the yard & test was called off eventually taken on 23 fed

Who did you use for your training  if you went to Newcastle test centre there are at least 2 ladies examiners both called Linda

Hi Animal ,
I trained with Tyne & Wear Lgv , i have to say they were great. I really should have passed 1st time but i knew i made silly mistakes like pulling out in front of cars on Blue house roundabout, lol .
I did do my test at Gosforth , 3 tests and 3 different examiners . the 2 Linda’s & Ken and none of them bite too hard lol.

Yep I used them for my Cat C & Ce but I think the guy who took me for CE has since moved on they were in there old place then & yep both Linda’s & Ken are fine thought Ken had retired tbh

Depends who your instructor were as well

Who do you work for  or are you still looking

Ialso used tyne & wear for my cat c , but that was about 11 years ago from there old yard in Hebburn . A house , wedding & 2 kids later i decided to do my class 1lol , does’nt time fly .

Currently driving for the co-op out of Birtley, in fact ive only ever driven for them.

There’s a display on the dash, but he says never trust it

WOT!!

That should be sorted. It’s an important aid for training

“it’s a computer, don’t trust it” he says :unamused:

I have an inbuilt dislike/distrust of computers - especially on trucks. But I DO trust a range change warning light! Pete

If this is how much emotion you can apply to selecting the wrong gear on a truck during a driving lesson, it sounds like you’re going to be ideally suited to a life in trucking. Abandoning a rude boss’s truck, punching an obnoxious gatekeeper, murderous road rage - it’s all going to come naturally. How are you on ■■■■■■■ into a lemonade bottle?

Stop worrying about it. People ■■■■ gear changes all the time, even in driving tests, and life goes on. I got a minor in my C+E (one of lots and lots of minors) for selecting 8th rather than 6th. I even saw the guy write it on his clipboard as I did it. The worst possible thing I could have done would have been to treat it like the fall of Rome and get all worked-up - check your mirrors, put it in the right gear, check your mirrors again and plough on.

I guess so mate, like I say it’s just made me a little bit wary of releasing the clutch now but I’ll continue to drive tomorrow as normal. CPC mod 4 tomorrow - not feeling great. Was feeling better towards my actual driving test than this. Will let you all know how I get on.

I wouldn’t dwell on it, the only thing that matters is how you drive on your test. He’s not going to cancel it just because you mess up one gearchange.

Sam Millar:
I’d rather you kept this to PM please. I don’t want my thread being filled up with this.

Good luck for tomorrow Samuel. Module 4 is a peice of ■■■■ if you like the sound of your own voice. Just keep talking until he tells you to shut up and make sure your hands get dirty.

Keep positive sam
you know you can do it your getting to the end of your course and tiredness plus nerves for your test are setting in relax get some good kip the night before and concentrate like bilio for that hr or so and you will hold that pass certificate
good luck

Got a Mod 4 pass certificate in my hand one minute then got told my test is tomorrow the next. So there you have it, I’ll either be a driver or not come 12 tomorrow.

Did pass a mock test this morning though.

Sam Millar:
Got a Mod 4 pass certificate

well done on the mod 4 pass , good luck for tomorrow.

Good luck for tomorrow Sam

Nice one Sam. Were there any surprises on the Mod 4 ? Did you get 100% or 95%

LGVTrainer:
Nice one Sam. Were there any surprises on the Mod 4 ? Did you get 100% or 95%

95%, not entirely sure why though because I went through absolutely everything, I even went to the bother of opening the battery box / looking behind the other rear door when I opened the first. Definitely not the one I was expecting to get marked for as that was the one I was most confident on.

Should note that it was the question; “you have left the lorry unattended for a short period of time, what measures could you take to make sure that the lorry hasn’t been tampered with in your absence…” or along those lines.

The most common thing for dropping marks on that question is not checking the fuel cap hadn’t been tampered with. The other is not checking the roof of the vehicle sufficiently.

Not to worry, your through that hurdle now. Its all about tomorrow. You most likely have the required skill level so make sure you are confident and positive. Your mental approach is easily as important as the driving skill. Don’t worry about the outcome of the test. That will take care of itself. Concentrate on how you have been taught to handle each situation and hazard.

Sam, good luck for your test.

I agree you should trust the computer for gear, I can only assume the trainer means dont trust the sound as you should of selected the correct gear.

Sam you will do fine just remember to keep calm and why you want the licence

Will be keeping fingers crossed for you.

Disco,

I’m sure you don’t need it Sam, but Good luck anyway with your test tomorrow!
