Category C - Price

So what is the typical price you’d expect to pay for cat C training including test fee & VAT?

I’ve seen about £1150, but wondering if it’s common to negotiate a much better price, so achieve £1k or less. I cannot seem to determine if the company offering this price was a broker or not though and i’ve read a lot of guidance about avoiding them (or at the very least proceeding with caution).

(I’m in East Midlands | Lincolnshire by the way - near Lincoln City to be precise)

Around the £1k mark is about average

One way to find out if its a broker is to ask for a meeting to meet the instructors and see the vehicles before paying anything because brokers will not allow you to do that

Find out about price for module 4 whilst enquiring if you do not already have a LGV C1 on your licence

Go to where your local test centre is or the tea bar nearest to your test centre. It’s the easiest way to suss out training companies and the vehicles they train in. Have a chat with any of the guys currently training as well.

Thanks, there are a couple local to me I think but their prices aren’t listed so need to give them a ring at some point. Just not sure what is the going rate.

I’ll also check on the Module 4 price as well - thanks for the suggestion.

Just remember price should only be one factor in choosing your training. If you get offered training for a lot less than a grand, check, double check, and triple check before handing over your hard earned.

You also need to consider how many hours tuition you receive for your money and if its 1-1 or 2-1 tuition, whichever suits you personally, so you can compare like with like, rather than just an arbitrary price.

Don’t do what I did and hand over £2000+ to AdvantageHGV and have to fight them through court for the best part of 4 months to get your own cash back lol… Fortunately I was the lucky one as plenty people never seen a penny back…

Hi yas4u,

Lots of people gave you the very same advice here:

The big secret is that you really should go to see the training provider and ONLY hand over your money when you’re satisfied that you’re happy to go ahead.

The way that brokers tend to work is that they (quite legally) put themselves into the equation as a middleman for stuff that you can quite easily do for yourself, THEN they charge you lots of extra money for their ‘services.’

A mainstream ( = NOT a broker) training provider will happily give you the same help and advice for free, so the decision between broker/mainstream is a no-brainer really.

This next link will take you to the TN list of recommended training providers.
:bulb: A good thing about this list is that TN members have used the providers it mentions and given them a recommendation on here after receiving a good service at a realistic price.

Take the advice above if you give you location it may help

Although a lot of us myself included have traveled for our provider as we think that this is best for us to gain the best possible training

Hi,

I did my Cat C with SDS who are based at Swinderby. The trainer’s name is Angie, and I found her to be a great trainer (based on my experience of one, though!). I think I paid £1065, that was for 4 days training with test on day 4. I did have to pay £30 for my ‘trial drive’ however, which some on here say is usually free. The trial drive was well over an hour, and we went from Swinderby and eventually into Lincoln, via The Birchwood, Tritton Road, over Pelham Bridge and up Lindum Hill leaving Lincoln by the (name escapes me) road that goes out to the roundabout on the A46 that you’d exit the 46 for Grimsby.

Hope that helps a bit as a recommendation for a good local trainer for you

Hi Steeps,

SDS are already on the TN recommended list, but thanks for the extra feedback, cos it all helps.

In fairness, not all providers offer a free drive, but for only £30, yours was quite a bargain!!
