*Category C* 21 Year old first job!

I’m 21 years old, just passed my CPC so I am ready to work! Going to be ringing agencies but already one has told me I am to young and they need experience. I live in the West Midlands… Dudley to be exact, does anyone know any companies that would be willing to take on a 21 year old for their first time?

Hello. Have you tried Muller Wiseman or Aspray 24? they both take on new people.

For agencies try Pure Staff Ltd. There’s one in Bilston (just up the road from me) and one in Wolverhampton. If I refer you, we can both get some cash.

As for work, I’m 20 and I work all week. Granted, I jump a lot of puddles, but I got my first job (7.5t) 3 days after signing on (I was 19 at the time).

Class One Recruitment are meant to be good (my uncle is with them), but I never heard back from them (clues in the name).

Don’t even bother with Pertemps. Also The Best Connection (this is more of a personal one, the receptionist took a disliking to me and it coloured my perception). If you want to try the Best Connection (I’ve seen their name mentioned a few times, so they do get placements) go to Walsall. That’s where their driving team is.

And if you go to agencies, make sure you know the tacho regs inside out. Look at analogue tacho’s too. And geographical knowledge might be a bonus (hard to build though).

As for permanent work? I have no experience, and everywhere I know of where you might have a chance is probably too far north for you.

Using the tacho for the first time is scary, I will admit. But it’s simple enough when you understand it. Go to YouTube and look up “How to use a tachograph”. Tons of videos. They explain all the gubbins (might be more interesting to watch paint dry, but how willing are you to part with £2500?).

As for hours? If you split it, only do 15 then 30. Never the other way round. Take a break every 6 hours working time (for the Working Time Directive). You may as well take 45 and reset your EC hours (4.5 hours driving time is EU rules). You’ll probably only be driving a little anyway so it doesn’t matter (3 hours driving, 5 hours other work is normal (on puddlejumpers)).WTD breaks are thus: No break under 6 hours duty (when you clocked on + 6 hours). Between 6 and 9 hours duty, 30 minutes. Over 9 hours duty is 45 minutes of break.

Just follow the EC rules and you’ll be fine (just do 45 mins after 6 hours and you shouldn’t fall foul of any rules).
