Hi everyone, I’m new to the forum but I’ve been reading many of the posts for the last year or so.
As in the title I have C1 with grandfather rights and been driving vans mostly and 7.5tonners as part of my job since I passed my car test.
I’m happy enough in my current job but it does go quite in the Winter and although I get paid anyway (not v.much!) I would rather be busy and as I work for a very small firm it would help them out too if they didn’t have to pay me full time this time of year.
So my question is do I go round local firms looking for casual (perhaps holiday cover) with the licence I have or upgrade to C or C+E (which is something I would like to do eventually anyway).
My thinking is I would expect to start on vans in anycase, prove myself, then maybe get offered bigger stuff.
I’ve got enough money behind me to get my Cat C, but I don’t want to waste it.
I realise that it’s tough out there for everyone right now, I just like driving and would like to drive an artic one day. I guess I don’t have to explain myself to you lot!
You could take your cv to a few yards and ask if they need any casuals. It saves agency fees for them so there are some that use them I did it for it for a firm here and whats good is you can say yes or no and you dont owe them anything if you say no so wont feel bad like agencys tend to. If you get in with a place who use all class of vehicle and prove yourself an asset it could well be a foot in the door for a job on cat c or c+e later on but you have to do the leg work first
The better qualified you are, the more doors are open. But the cost of training isn’t pennies, so you may well need to get some C1 work and upgrade your licence as you are able.
As Ollie says, you may just get a lucky break. It happens so don’t give up.
Hiyyaaa 1968kg, you have some good adivce from these guys, now should be a good time to get your cv put around - hopefully things should pick up now for extra work before Christmas (although it may probably go quiet for a couple of months after). Anything’s worth a try, nothing ventured nothing gained. Good luck & welcome
